Through the good, the bad, and the ugly, through thick and thin, you will always be each other’s second half. There are just some things you will never forget, and there are other things your twin will just never let you live down. No relationship could ever be compared to the one you share with a twin. Your unbreakable bond makes the little things in life seem like massive moments that could never be forgotten.
When you stopped wearing matching outfits.
Up until now, your identities have had a physical tie of forced outfit coordination. One of you wore pink, the other’s designated color was purple. Besides that, there really wasn’t a difference between your wardrobe. Even your shoes were all the same, which led to interesting arguments over whose belonged to whom. But there comes a day when one of you deliberately wears a different outfit, making her stance of independence. At first, you see your sister’s move as a fau paux, so you tell her to get changed. It is not until she refuses to change that you realize the shake in the cosmos. From then on out, you have to learn to become an individual.
Her first boyfriend.
This is the first time in your lives that someone else truly enters the picture in your lives. You may have friends, but more likely than not, you both share commonalities with all of your friends. It is not until your twin brings a significant other into the equation that you realize that other people in the world might, in fact, show significant interest in your second half. This is both heart-warming and cause for concern because if anything happens to her, your heart will break as well. Basically, your job as twin is to let this boy know that you two could be good friends or worst enemies, and the choice is up to him. If he’s smart, he’ll fear you and strive to gain your approval because, in the end, you and he know your sister will always choose you over anyone.
Sleeping alone for the first time.
If you two grew up with your own rooms, this may not be a life-shattering moment, but the first night in your life alone is an odd feeling. Because it seemed from day one, she was always at your side; from cribs to beds, your shared room has been through a lot. And when you turn the light off for your first night alone, an uncomfortable feeling stirs in your chest. It’s not fear that strikes you, but it pulls at your heart strings to not fall asleep next to her. Up until now, you two spent every night talking to each other, gossiping about everything and everyone, and trying to be quiet enough to not wake up mom and dad in the other room. To not have someone in the bed next of you just feels odd the first few times, and that weird feeling will forever linger.
Going to college.
Going to college is a big deal. This life-altering event defines the end of your childhood. At this point in your life, you get the chance to start over with new friends, new relationships, and to show the world who you want to be. And for the first time in your entire life, you are identified my you. You aren't “So and so’s twin,” you are you. That point is when you truly realize just how unique your relationship with your sister is. Not only do you share a birthday, but you share an identity. Up until now, you were both “the twins,” and to no longer have that as part of your identity makes you feel naked; you come to the realization that you are your own person, which is frightening until you get used to being only you. This is the first time in your entire life that you must conquer the world as an individual. But you know you not to fear because your second half will always be less than a phone call away.
