Nowadays, it seems like most of our favorite shows are being produced by Netflix. Orange is the New Black? Awesome. Hemlock Grove? Hella awesome? Arrested Development? Well, they tried. It's a great outlet for newer, quirkier, and most certainly not politically correct shows to air to the public. Over spring break, I was perusing Netflix after work and I stumbled upon this show. I had read a review about earlier, about how it's super racist, but I decided to give it a try. Like with most things I was wary at first, being that I am super picky when it comes to television shows (Don't even get me started on how much I LOATHE Pretty Little Liars) and movies. I gave the first couple of episodes a try (because you obviously can't judge a show after one episode) and knew I was hooked.
The series revolves around a former cult member, Kimmy Schmidt, who was kidnapped in 1998 by this crazy-apocalypse-believing pastor, and her crazy adventures living in New York City in 2015. She decides not to return to her little town in Indiana, but to stay in New York City. Now here's the kicker: she was kidnapped when she was thirteen and stayed in a bunker for fourteen years of her life, so if you thought that one person in your sorority is sheltered, then you obviously haven't seen this show. While in New York City, she meets Titus Andromedon, a struggling actor, who is kind of like Kimmy's reality check, Lillian, her quirky landlady, and Jaqueline Voorhies, her crazy, uber wealthy employer.
Honestly, this show is a whirlwind of hilarity and 90's jokes. Since Kimmy was thirteen when she was kidnapped, she missed out on a lot of major events, like the death of Kurt Cobain and selfies. Watching her bumble through New York City in 2015 is hilarious and defeating Jacqueline's evil stepdaughter Xanthippe (Yes that is her name. No, I don't know how to pronounce it) with the power of goodness and sunshine will bring a little bit of sparkle to your day. Kimmy's kindness is infectious and you can see it in the show. Like how she befriends Dong, the Vietnamese boy she meets in her GED class, and gives Buckley Voorhies the best birthday ever by letting him beat up Titus in an off brand Iron Man suit, which proves how messed up this kid is, but hey it's not what you expected.
Seriously people, if you're a fan of 30 Rock, Mean Girls, and a strong female protagonist then you NEED to watch this show! Tina Fey has done right by us once again. She doesn't directly star in it, but she wrote and created it so it's just as good as her being in it. It's got that dark, yet happy humor we haven't seen since Pushing Daisies. Think of this show as Disney for adults. What's even better is that the theme song is super catchy and is a great song to start your day. All in all, I give this show 5 out of 5 stars, for creativity, humor, and the way that it makes fun of society.
