In a college full of overachievers, interesting teachers and subpar dining hall food, Becky Feigin, that's me, and her three best friends (or whoever I could scrounge up) tried to do the impossible. Create a guide that will help you survive UK.
Tip #48 While driving, pedestrians always have the right of way, whether there is a crosswalk or not.
Students at UK are known to cross the streets on campus without a care in the world. Some people joke that we just close our eyes and walk. To avoid an accident, it's best to drive slowly and always keep an eye out for pedestrians while driving through campus.
Tip #56 Enter the basketball lotteries at your own risk.
The basketball lotteries tend to run extremely late, and the chances of you being called first are slim to none. You'll get bored quickly while waiting for your number to get called, so make sure to bring a book or some homework to do while you are waiting.
Tip #65 If you want to get a table in Willy T. during midterm, finals or dead week, you have to get to the library before 5 p.m.
Students love to study for midterms and finals in the library. If you are hoping to get a table for you and your friends, do expect to show up at 7 p.m. and find one waiting for you on the fifth, third or even second floor.
Tip #486 Buy a raincoat!
Lexington is known for its random torrential downpours. Lexington is also known for it's extremely strong winds. Put these two together, add in an umbrella and you have yourself a recipe for disaster. Let's just say if you choose an umbrella over a raincoat, you will not need a shower that day.
Tip #605 If you don't want to wait on a long line at the Willy T. Starbucks, don't go 15 minutes before classes start or after they end.
The line at the Starbucks at Willy T. can get really out of hand, like out the door out of hand. If you are trying to avoid said line you need to meticulously plan out when you are going to get your coffee fix.
Tip #610 Just because there aren't assigned seats, doesn't mean you can switch seats before every class.
People usually pick a seat the first day of class and then return to that seat every day for the rest of the semester. Don't be that person who moves around each time you show up to class, which just messes with everyone else's usual seating arrangement.
Tip #650 Think of the JC as your really cool friend. Hang out with the JC... a lot!
We are lucky enough to have an amazing gym on our campus. If you don't want the rumored freshman 15 to haunt you, go to the JC and take advantage of all it has to offer.
Tip #45 The first day of a semester can be scary, but just keep in mind that everyone is in the same boat as you.
New classes, new faces, new professors — it's all very scary. The thing is, everyone in that classroom is feeling the same way as you, so you really have nothing to worry about.
Tip #48 Don't be that person who raises their hand in class but then realizes they don't even know what they are saying or asking.
Quite frankly, we feel as embarrassed for you as you are feeling.
Tip #510 Do not, I repeat, do not be that person who asks your professor or TA a question off of the syllabus.
Unless, of course, you want to drive them insane. Your professors will tell you on the first day of class that they do not appreciate when students ask them questions when the answers are right there in the syllabus. Read your syllabi, study them, they are your life for the next semester.
Tip #808 You're in college now. You are considered an adult. If you like someone, ask them out.
Enough with playing hard to get, enough with the mixed signals and enough with the "I'll wait for them to come to me." Just grow up and approach whoever you like and ask them out, even if it's just for a cup of coffee.
