A substitute teacher's job is commonly overlooked. Controlling students that you've never seen before is clearly a task with true difficulty, and all substitute teachers handle this "pressure" very differently. Every student has encountered nearly all of these types of substitute teachers, no doubt.
1. The Demotivated Sub
With a very little pay, it's pretty fair to see how unmotivated some subs can get. After the dull "Follow the directions, be quiet and begin" from these unmotivated robots, many students themselves become unmotivated. For long term substitutes, this kind can be dangerous to students, as the class then turns into a study hall with no work and difficult tests containing untaught curriculum.
2. The Rule-Book Sub
This is pretty self explanatory. Many times, the teacher leaves a vague message for the substitute teacher including some rules that are commonly followed in the particular classroom. Some subs go above and beyond to enforce those rules. It's pretty obvious that the students don't appreciate a try-hard sub trying to purposefully punish somebody for breaking a frequently broken rule. I've known people who've been given a detention for "talking" from the rule book sub.
3. Mrs. Dedication
This is the exact opposite of the demotivated sub. I say "Mrs." Dedication solely because of how substitutes with unreal amounts of devotion are usually females, statistically speaking. This kind of sub is usually found on a more long-term substitute type level, as the sub makes it their sole purpose in life to attach themselves to the classroom and become the teacher. This substitute teacher is very respectable, as anybody could name a million reasons for a substitute to have a crude, shallow heart. But Mrs. Dedication holds true to helping his/her students succeed as much as and better than before the departure of the teacher.
4. The Easily Made Fun Of
Whether it's the thick Indian accent or the loud click her heels make on the school floors, there are always a couple substitutes in every school that students just find ways to make fun of. It's fair to say that any student can find anything wrong with a sub, but this one loves to spotlight the "flaw" at hand. For an entire class period, the classroom will be filled with whispers and laughs about the substitute, which is clearly horrible, but it's brutally true.
