We all have unique personalities. We respond differently to people and have differing ways of communicating with each other. Although these differences are what make human interaction so important and interesting, they also make friendships and maintaining relationships a little difficult. Without acknowledging these differences and accepting them, we hurt and disappoint each other. We set expectations for all of our friends to be just like us, but we also categorize our friends to fit into the different niches of our life. Each friend has a unique personality that has a specific way it works with yours. And they're all equally important.
Here are the types of friends that we all have.
1. The Party Buddy
This is the friend you love having fun with, but that's pretty much the only extent to which you know him/her. You're both down to have a good time with each other and you know basic facts about one another, but they know more about your party mistakes and hookups than your serious decisions and crushes.
2. The Smart Friend
This is the friend that you see in your class the first day of school and can't help but smile in relief. This person is always on top of everything, and he/she will know the answer to every question you have for that class. How long does that paper have to be? When is the next midterm? Just shoot this friend a text and you're set.
3. The "Good Friend"
The typical "good friend" is that friend you genuinely have a blast with and knows you on a deeper level, but you still maintain an invisible boundary. They will support you in every decision you make if you choose to tell them, and you will do the same for them. They care about you but they're not the first ones to wish you happy birthday or ask if you're feeling better after you skip a day at school.
4. The Best Friend
The best friend is that person on the same wavelength as you. You two have spent so much time together that you can practically read each other's minds. S/he is your partner in crime, and you can't imagine a day without him/her. You can go to this person with anything, and s/he will tell you as it is--your best friend is the person that isn't afraid to give you a reality check. You like and dislike the same things, and sometimes you wonder if you two are the same person.
As the saying goes: a good friend will bail you out of jail while a best friend will be in jail right next to you.
5. The Sister/Brother
This is your person. This is that friend that exceeds every definition of "friend"--you absolutely need this person in your life. Your relationship has come to a point where you are dependent on him/her and they are dependent on you, and both of you are absolutely OK with that. Sitting next to him/her doing absolutely nothing means absolutely everything to you. This is the person that you're going to get in fights in with and have occasional weird phases of being mad at each other out of love. But this is also the person that you're going to come back to and realize once again that this person means the world to you--and it's so special to have someone like that.
