The Golden State Warriors have been the most talked about team in the NBA this year by a landslide. A big reason for that is the MVP caliber play they are getting out of their point guard, Steph Curry.
They have also been the most talked about team for a big reason, they are chasing history; trying to break the 1995-96 Chicago Bulls win record of 72 wins and just 10 losses. The 95-96 Chicago team, is one that many consider the best of all time as they went on to win the NBA finals that year to complete the record season.
While the Warriors numbers so far are extremely impressive (a record of 46 wins and a mere 4 losses), there is however, another legendary team being overlooked for their play this year: the San Antonio Spurs.
This storied franchise that is the San Antonio Spurs have been playing outstanding basketball all year as well posting a current record of 43 wins and just 8 losses. It’s safe to say if the Golden State Warriors were not playing at the level they are at right now, the Spurs would stand atop the basketball world and dominate the media. With their own version of a “big 3” in Tim Duncan, Tony Parker, and Manu Ginobli whom linked up in 2004 and haven’t missed the playoffs since. They have been able to dominate their division with the help of a young Kawhi Leonard, and other key pieces to the puzzle that has allowed them to have had this continued success.
The amount of success the big three have made over the years might make them the most winningest trio in NBA history when it’s all said and done.
But back to this current Spurs team, a team with a little bit of depth, but more veterans who know a thing or two about winning and how to get it done in the big games. They have been rolling just as much as the Warriors as they achieved something that has never occurred in NBA history this past week being the 1st season to ever have two teams reach 42 wins in the first 50 games of the season. The Spurs also still have a shot to tie or break Michael Jordan’s 95-96 Bull’s record. The media has been completely taken over by the Warriors and mainly, Steph Curry, this season despite the fact that the Spurs are still very much alive in competing to break this record as well. ESPN has a tendency to find a story, or in this case a person to follow more intently than others, this season and towards the end of last season Steph Curry has been the chosen one. A few reasons the Spurs don’t get, as much talk like the Warriors is their style of play and the age of their players. The Warriors are a flashy, young, fast paced, three point shooting team that make plays that are unheard of and get crowds into the game. The Spurs on the other hand are a veteraned, team oriented, and more of a old school basketball team, in todays media age this doesn’t get you the kind of recognition that you deserve. Today’s NBA game is very different; it’s all about highflying dunks, flashy moves, and three pointers. The Spurs are a basketball team that comes in plays the game as a team and gets their job done night in and night out. This is a reason they have been able to maintain such a successful franchise for so long, they understand what it takes to win in this league. Now the question remains who breaks or ties this Chicago Bulls record, the Golden State Warriors or the San Antonio Spurs?
