"Two Faced" -- A Mini-Monster Story

In my Monsters in Literature class we were given an assignment to write an original monster story in four to seven pages. This story is 100 percent fictional and was just a creation of my imagination. I'm planning on continuing with this monster story. So far (what I handed in) is enough to tell a short little monster story, but in the following weeks I will be posting on The Odyssey the extended version of my monster story. The story is set in a small town in New Jersey, inside a house unlike any other. The main character of the story, Lorenzo, is trying to keep his family safe from a strange being that keeps appearing at his house. His family won't believe him until something goes terribly wrong. So, in the coming weeks you'll be getting excerpts from my monster story, "Two Faced." Enjoy!

Lorenzo’s Journal

September 29th, 1998

Entry #1:

My Name is Lorenzo Del Vecchio, I have started these journal entries to report the strange things going on in my house. I’m the only one in this whole house who has seen the creature. I’ve had a few encounters with the creature so far and my children, Janet and Sara, and my wife, Shannon, still won’t believe me. I believe the creature is some sort of shapeshifter because every time I see it, it tends to look different. So from here on in I will be keeping a tab on all my encounters with this beast.

It was September 13th,1998 when I first realized there was something in my home. When I went down into the cellar to grab a bottle of wine, I heard a faint noise coming from behind me. I turned around to see, in the darker side of the basement, a tall figure that looked identical to myself. I thought to myself, “This can’t be real,” but I was so wrong. I rubbed my eyes in disbelief; I looked back, and it was gone.

I quickly made my way up the stairs with my bottle of wine. I told Shannon about the oddity that had happened in the basement. She thought I was joking and wouldn't believe me. I told her it was like looking into a large mirror; I saw myself on the other side of the room, same clothes, same hairstyle, same face, and same body type. Everything was the same; I was reflected to a tee.

After telling Shannon, I went into Janet and Sara’s room and told them to be cautious around the house, I told them about what happened in the cellar. All they said to me was “Dad stop trying to scare us” and “I don’t believe you.” I then warned them again to be cautious and then I left.

I’m just concerned for my family and my health. Maybe I’m going crazy, or maybe I’m not and there is an actual threat to all living in this house. One thing is certain though: I’m going to keep my family safe at all costs.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
