20 Things I Learned By 20

Little life lessons from someone who is no longer a teenager.

There are many things I have learned and many things I have failed at learning. These are just a few of the things that I have failed and succeeded at doing.

Do what makes you happy.

This is the most important and the biggest thing I had to learn. Find what makes you happy and never stop doing it, okay maybe sometimes to give yourself a break, but other than that keep doing what makes you happy. If other people don't agree, then shrug it off and keep doing you.

Your mental and physical health comes first.

I know that with how fast today's world works that this is easily forgotten, but remember that you need to take a break sometimes.

Your grades do not define you.

No matter what you are better than what you got on the test you forgot to study for.

Do not bottle up your emotions.

You know the John Mulaney bit...yeah don't do that.

Say "Yes" to last minute plans.

Sometimes the best things happen when you go out and weren't planning on it.

Know when to say no.

Sometimes you just can't go out like you want or things happen that you have to put a stop to before they escalate. Saying "no" isn't going to make someone think that you are being mean, just make sure that you are respectful about it.

Know your personal boundaries.

For example, know that you cannot function properly on two hours of sleep and three coffees.

There's nothing wrong with staying in for the night and watching Netflix.

Seriously, spending the night in after a fast paced day can be the best thing in the world.

Sometimes going out with friends is the only therapy you need.

Laughter is the best medicine and adding friends who can make you laugh and forget what is happening for a while are so important.

Other times you need a professional.

Getting professional help is so important. There are times when you need to talk to someone who can actually give you advice that works. Don't feel bad if you feel like you have to talk to a professional, it's their job and they want to help.

Watch bad movies just for fun.

Seriously do it. Pop some popcorn, get some other snacks, and invite friends over to watch a bad movie. You can just watch it or make fun of it the entire time, but just do it.

Change will happen whether you like it or not.

Instead of fighting against change, sometimes you need to go with the flow. Trust me, it can be a lot easier.

It's okay to slow down.

You do not have to be going full speed at all times. Take a second, minute, hour, day, or however long to just chill.

Drink water.

You need it and you can't survive on iced coffees.

Take pictures.

Take pictures of the things that you like, friends, family, pets, etc.

Spend time with your family.

They miss you, especially if you don't go home to visit.

Spend time with your pets!

Unfortunately, they won't be around for forever so take advantage of the time that you do have.

Sometimes you just need some good music and a dance party.

Do not underestimate the power of a good dance party.

Step out of your comfort zone.

90% of the time you will not regret it.

Asking for help does NOT make you weak.

This was the hardest lesson I had to learn. I am so bad at asking for help, but I'm working on it.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

Top 10 Reasons My School Rocks!

Why I Chose a Small School Over a Big University.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
