On Tuesday June 6, 2016 I attended the Toronto, Ontario show of Twenty One Pilots' Emotional Roadshow tour. When I heard they were going on tour, I knew that I had to somehow get myself a ticket. I ended up getting a Pit/GA ticket for a show that was a five-hour drive away, but I knew it would be worth it.
The band, Twenty One Pilots is made up of Tyler Joseph and Josh Dun and originates from Columbus, Ohio and was formed in 2009. But just recently, the band has gotten the hits they deserve. In the year 2014, they started to break through and the mainstream music scene got a hold of them. Their song "Stressed Out" peaked at number two on the Billboard Hot 100, and number one on both Alternative Songs and Hot Rock Songs. Their latest album "Blurryface" was released May 17, 2015, selling over 134,000 in the first week and became the number one album on the Billboard 200.
The band just started their latest tour, Emotional Roadshow, in Cincinnati, Ohio on May 31, 2016. Toronto was the sixth show on the tour and the one I was lucky enough to attend. They were joined by Chef'Special and MuteMath.
My roommate, Kayleigh and I left early Tuesday morning and were through the border by noon. Explaining to a border guard that you are going into Canada for 24 hours to see a concert is quite comical. But finally, we made it to the Molson Canadian Amphitheater around 4:00 p.m. which gave us three hours until the doors opened. We spent way too much money on parking and tour t-shirts, and then got in the line for general admission tickets.
Being surrounded by other fans is always an amazing experience and feeding off everyone else's energy, we were able to survive the three-hour wait without any cell-service or Wi-Fi. We were let into the amphitheater, corralled through all the food stands, and were placed down by the stage. The stage was quite large and tall which gave us an amazing view even if we were about seven or eight rows back.
And then we had another hour wait until the first opening band. Both openers were good in their own way, but the anticipation just kept ramping up until it was finally time for Twenty One Pilots to come onto the stage. Everything went quiet and then the stage went red. Tyler and Josh appeared on the stage wearing their signature masks and red jackets while the microphone descended from the sky. Let me just say, these two boys know how to put on a show.
At one point during the show, Tyler looked out at the crowd then back at Josh and told us that sometimes before coming out on stage they still feared that no one would be in the crowd or no one would know their lyrics. Seeing as their tour is almost one hundred percent sold out and there was not one moment during the concert without people singing along, this thought is quite misplaced. While they love their fans and everything they have done for the band, they also fear the mainstream. The concert after mine, in Cleveland, Tyler actually changed some of the lyrics to their most popular song, Stressed Out, to reflect how they feel about its popularity.
According to the band, the purpose of their music is to make people think and to encourage them to find joy in life, and it seems they are afraid that mainstream radio will ruin that for them. Their concert was full of life, love and excitement. Every song change brought more screaming and cheering from the fans and each set/costume change brought something new to the show. From the dancers wearing gas masks to the portable drum kit that the fans in the pit supported while Josh rocked out, the show was incredible.
If you were lucky enough to get a ticket, congratulations you are in for a show of your life time, and if you did not get tickets and are regretting it...well I bought my ticket on StubHub so you could always check out prices there. Or I mean, you could just watch your friend's snapchat stories. This is my formal apology for my six-minute long snapchat story the other day, but I'm not really that sorry. It was totally worth it.
