10 Things I Learned About Being 21

Here's to being Twenty-Fun

I think it's fair to say one of the most exciting things about turning twenty-one is being legal. No more sneaking around, no more asking others to buy you stuff. Because you are legal. But I think it's fair to say once the champagne popping stops, once the weekends settle down, you look back and learn things—twenty-one to be exact.

1. Pop That Bubbly.

Alcohol, one of the most iconic things about turning twenty-one. While for most people it might not be their first drink, or two, but for others, it's the first sip that makes you think, "wow, I'm really an adult." It even makes other think that. That somehow alcohol is a mark of maturity, and if you can drink it, you're an adult now.

And I say pop the bubbly, wear your sash, but know this doesn't make you anything but a year older. How you choose to drink will either turn you into an immature child, take you down a criminal path, or lead to the ultimate destruction of your body and mind. It isn't evil. But how YOU choose to drink it can determine a lot of things.

2. #SquadGoals.

The second thing I think you learn about being twenty-one is who your true friends are. Who encourages you to drink? Who blacks out and makes you take care of them? Who helps you and watches out for you? It'll say a lot about the kind of friend they are to you, and the type of friendship you have.

3. Dancin' On Table Tops.

It's 100% okay to let loose, try something new, dance on a table with friends because you're having a good time. Or dance until your feet hurt because it should be about having fun. It's not about how you look, or who's watching you, have fun.

4. Shots, Shots, Shots.

Enjoy being able to drink legally, but watch how many shots you take. Be mindful of how you mix your drinks and the amount you're drinking, because at some point, you'll feel it, and it will all catch up to you.

5. Drinking Buddies.

Meet new friends, enjoy the company of others.

Everyone has a different perspective of the bar scenes and granted, it's not always good.

But at times you can meet very friendly people, whether you're dancing on the dance floor, waiting in line for the bathroom, or awkwardly standing alone.

Don't be afraid of people,

and don't be afraid to meet new people.

6. Lyft Yourself Up, And Uber Your Butt Home.

Seriously invest in Lyft or uber, just don't drive under the influence.

You're not only saving yourself a mean ticket, and possible jail time.

But you're also saving other people's lives.

So don't be stupid. Download the apps.

7. You Can't Heal Real Pain Through Self Medication.

We've all had those bad weeks or those stressful days.

He broke up with me, she left me for someone else.

Or what have you, but a drink, or two, or five, really won't solve that problem.

If anything you'll embarrass yourself, ruin your situation even more or create new problems.

Don't be the person who drunk texts your ex, it's the worst.

And know that if you've got serious stuff going on, then you need to actually deal with it like an adult.

And self-medicating isn't how you do it.

8. Remember Who You REALLY Are.

You're someone's daughter, someone's friend, classmate, or co-worker. You were a little girl once, with hopes and dreams. So don't ruin that, don't do thing's you'll regret forever, or do something to alter your life. And know that you're still young, don't allow things to so heavily influence you, or change who you are.

9. Boys vs. Men.

I think it's pretty fair to say there is a distinct difference between boys and men.

Don't be with a guy who just recently experienced a breakup, be careful with people you meet on apps, most just want one thing.

Make sure he actually communicates with you and has goals for his life.

Don't settle for someone because of your attraction to them solely, it's not worth it.

10. #Value.

Value yourself, and value the people around you. Life is SO short, but it's your life, it's a life you get to have each day, and that is something to be thankful for. You matter. So don't do something that will harm yourself, degrade yourself, or change who you are.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
