If you’ve read Tessa Fahey’s article titled "Every Odyssey Article You’ve Ever Read", then you might find the irony in me writing this response (thank you #17). Honestly, Fahey is not wrong. Some of the articles on Odyssey may seem monotonous. However, judging by the fact you yourself are STILL reading this article, you can agree that there is some gold within the Odyssey community that keeps drawing you back for more.
But why then, my dear reader, are you reading something that is so “repetitive” or uses "the same GIFs every time.” Are you really bordered by the raw emotions of someone who writes about the death of a friend? And I know you don’t know JP, but wouldn’t you be a little bit interested in a dramatic open letter to my ex saying everything you wish you had said to yours? (Don’t worry JP, I have nothing left to say)
Forgive me if I’m wrong, but it seemed as though Fahey's article had a negative connotation towards the imagination and posh organization of the Odyssey ways. Yes, odds are that listicle has been written before in some shape or another- ESPECIALLY if it’s told by The Office. However, no matter what someone writes, it’s unique because it’s their writing.
My response is not in any way supposed to put Fahey's article down. It’s honestly one of my favorite articles because it’s so true. Looking at my own feed, I’ve written at least 5 of the articles she mentions on her list- now 6 after this one. Yet, I still feel the need to clarify: this will never take away from the fact that the Odyssey provides a beautiful and freeing outlet for creativity.
That’s what makes each article so special. They each have their own twist on a subject that has been talked about for centuries. Love, loss, hope, passion, politics, entertainment- these topics are repetitive because the writers behind the words are human. We all feel, think, and want similar things and it’s nice to read about other people who make us feel relatable.
Why are there so many articles advertising new trends? Because people want to know about the next best (and reliable) items. Why are there so many half-assed low detailed news articles? Because every great journalist for the Chicago Tribune has to start somewhere. Why are there so many passive aggressive articles? Because they free the writer’s inner thoughts; which honestly many people have felt before and never had the balls to say let alone publish.
So here’s to the boy who just joined and has another playlist of old school songs for us; to the girl that reminds me of a t.v. series I forgot about but finished 3 times in high school; to the older generations that will continue to defend why “back in the old days” things were harder and better; to the passionate feminist, the controversial future politician, and especially you, the reader.
Thank you for always supporting us, and joining our never ending conversation. And thank you to the writers who are constantly recreating, revising, and sparking the conversation to start.
Also, thank you NBC for having faith in The Office so that us writers would have an abundance of outstanding GIFs.
My point is this: write on my friends, and don’t be afraid of the uncomfortable realness, potential repetitiveness, and creative genius that comes out.
