Fool me once, shame on you.
Fool me twice, shame on me.
Fool me three times, well, we can vote him out of office in 2020.
Trump’s cabinet appointments have resulted in a chorus of disapproval from the Democrats both in government and the media. With people such as Steve Bannon, former executive chair of controversial right-wing media outlet Breitbart News, and Sen. Jeff Sessions of Alabama having already been tapped for important cabinet positions, the outrage has been deafening.
But perhaps the most interesting group to be outraged by some of his appointments are his own supporters. President-Elect Trump’s ongoing discussions with 2012 Republican Presidential Nominee Mitt Romney about a possible position as Secretary of State as well as the consideration of South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley for UN Ambassador have aggravated his supporters who resonated with his calls to “drain the swamp.” To many of these voters, it appears as though Mr. Trump has taken the swamp and turned it into his own swimming pool.
Many of his most avid supporters have already denounced these appointments, including former congressman Joe Walsh (@WalshFreedom) who showed disappointment over Trump’s consideration of former Goldman Sachs executive Steven Mnuchin for Secretary of the Treasury.
But can we really blame the President-Elect for this? After all, one of the biggest challenges facing the Trump administration will be finding a way to heal the divides created by his campaign. To some, his courting of big GOP names could be his way of attempting to bring the establishment he railed against so much into the fold.
However the President-Elect chooses to populate his cabinet is his business. However, if these appointments haven’t already made it apparent, it’s clear that Mr. Trump has a lot of work to do to convince some of his supporters that he is going to control Washington rather than it controlling him.
