These last few weeks have been some sort of roller-coaster for Trump, in the fact that his name has literally been dragged through the media multiple times, but for good reason. These past few months, many have been calling him out on his contradictions between President Obama and himself. All that has come about of President Trump’s accusations are proof showing that not only does Trump take more time off of work and more vacations, but that it costs the American public way more money than President Obama’s vacations did. According to CNN, “To date, Trump has spent six weekends — and a total of 21 days — at Mar-A-Lago, his private Palm Beach club. The total estimated costs for those trips are around $21.6 million. Obama, by contrast, spent just under $97 million on travel in his eight years as president, according to documents reviewed by Judicial Watch, a conservative government watchdog.”
The most recent of Trump’s shenanigans has been the firing of FBI Director James Comey. Trump made the decision to fire Comey because the former FBI head was in the middle of an investigation looking into Russian interference in the 2016 election, as well as the possibility that the Russian government may be working with the Trump team. Many compared the Comey firing to the Watergate scandal, when President Nixon fired the prosecutor investigating the Nixon administration's involvement in the Watergate burglary. Directly after Nixon did that, just three days later, people were preparing to undergo impeachment.
Now, here we are, five impeachable offenses in and people are now looking at impeachment procedures. In an article for The Nation, the offenses are referred to as such: “It didn’t involve firing the director of the FBI, or conspiring with the attorney general to facilitate the firing that even some Republicans saw as a potential obstruction of justice, or bragging to the Russians about how “pressure” was “taken off” by that firing, or any of the other evidences of presidential maladministration that scream out for an accountability moment.”
There is a new issue though, included in the five offenses, that may have people asking for impeachment: President Trump’s refusal to respect the requirements that the U.S Constitution places on presidents when it comes to matters of war and peace. The Nation notes, “On Wednesday, US forces carried out more unauthorized airstrikes on pro-government forces in Syria.” This goes against the War Powers Act which specifically states that the Legislative Branch has the power to bring about new military actions, not the Executive. War Powers aside, President Trump did not have the authority to go forth with the airstrikes under International Law. The United Nations Charter, one which the United States ratified, only sees two reasons for using force on another country without their consent: one being the permission of the security council and the other being a self-defense claim. According to the New York Times, “The United Nations did not approve the Strike, and the Defense Department justified it as 'intended to deter the regime from using chemical weapons again,' which is not self-defense.”
While White House lawyers are said to be looking into impeachment procedures, many at the White House have still called his impeachment a distant and unlikely possibility. For now, good luck to you Mr. President!
