The U.S. government has had its fair share of controversy, and this past year was no exception.

Since Donald Trump started his campaign for presidency in mid-2015, there was already something to talk about.

From the start of his campaign and into his presidency, Trump has been talked about a lot. He's been praised and criticized, and it seems as though everyone is portrayed to either love or loathe him.

With so much talk about Trump from both the media and the public, it's easy to be caught in a game of telephone. With so much information and so many rumors and assumptions flying around, it's easy to paint a stereotypical picture of who Trump is and who supports him. Everyone seems to have their own strict idea of what a Trump supporter is like, and it's easy to forget that -- like with most things -- no two people are the same.

Trump has been a nonstop conversation since coming into office. Everyone has thoughts about his first year, including his supporters.

I spoke with seven people who support Donald Trump and asked them what they thought of his first year as President. Here's what they had to say.

Note: Some participants have requested to remain anonymous.

1. When did you start supporting Trump? Was it from the get-go or did it take time?

“I didn’t really start supporting him until after the primary election. I initially was leaning toward Gary Johnson and voted for him in the primaries. It took some time to start supporting him.” Jennifer V, 44

“The get-go. I thought he’d be a great president because he’s unlike the things we’re used to.” Jericka E, 18

“It was a gradual process, but that process only began after he became president. It was about three months into it that I realized I wanted him to do the things he promised to do.” n/a, 22

“My support started when no other Republican stepped up to the plate.” John P, 70

2. What made you start supporting him?

“I don’t support him in the sense as a person but by his title as President. I see it as if he does good at his job it’s good for us. If he does bad, that’s bad for all of us.” n/a, 23

“I was never against him, he was just not my top choice. I supported him as the Republican candidate.” Emery S, 19

“In my government class as a senior, my teacher taught us the basic principles of government, but he also gave us some insight on how he thinks the country should be ran, so when Trump came about, what he stood for matched what my teacher taught me.” Jericka E, 18

3. Do you regret voting for Trump? If so, what made you regret that decision?

“I don’t love President Trump, but I can’t say that I regret voting for him as I still believe that he has more to offer the US than his opponent. The ability to vote is a privilege that too many people take for granted. If all of the people who are complaining about his presidency had exercised their right to vote from the time of the primaries, we may have had someone different in office.” Jennifer V, 44

“I regret not voting for him. I voted for Hillary Clinton.” n/a, 22

“Not yet. He does and says things that I question, but the press treats him with such bias that it is difficult to measure real performance. His actual accomplishments are fairly impressive for a first year.” John P, 70

“I do not regret voting for him at all.” Stephen H., 25

4. Do you feel Trump tweets too much?

“I don't necessarily think he tweets too much, but tweets about the dumbest shit when he does. His mouth could shut sometimes, especially when he’s talking about nuke buttons.” n/a, 23

“I do think he has some maturity issues, that’s for sure, and tweeting is sort of the root of it.” Jericka E, 18

“Yes! Take the damn phone away.” John P., 70

“I love his tweets. I think it is great that a president is that vocal and doesn't care who he offends.” Stephen H, 25

5. On a scale of 1-10 (1 being extremely bad and 10 being extremely good), how would you rate Trump's overall performance in office?

“Probably a solid six or seven. While he’s not charismatic, especially compared to our last president, some things he has done like the tax cuts are welcome. But like government always is, one good thing they do, seven bad things happen as well.” n/a, 23

“There has not been anything significant in his presidency to sway my opinion very far in either direction. So far, I’m inclined to give him a five.” Jennifer V, 44

“I’d say about a seven or eight. While he may not be politically correct (which may not be a bad thing), like it or not he is getting stuff done in office, which can’t be said for previous administrations.” Emery S, 19

“I would rate Trump so far at a seven. I give him high marks for making the effort to keep his promises while I give him low marks for communication skills.” n/a, 22

6. Do you agree with any criticism the media has had about Trump or do you feel they are just attempting to paint a negative picture?

“There are some things I agree with, and some things I don’t. What I do think though is that people have so much media up their ass that they cannot spot the truths in between the lies.” Jericka E, 18

“There is legitimate criticism, however, the bias in coverage is painful. It seems every news piece becomes a negative op-ed.” John P, 70

“I feel that all of the media is biased and that they will paint a picture that benefits them or the party they support.” Stephen H, 25

7. Do you feel this past year would have been different if Trump had held a political position prior to presidency?

“A whole lifetime of running businesses with thousands of employees is not on the same scale as a senate or house seat. But, I think that it may be comparable. Literally anyone with the money and is of age could run, the founding fathers wanted us to. I don’t think the career politician way should be the only way.” n/a, 23

“Potentially, had he not have said some of the things he has, as they are not typically politically acceptable. He may not be wrong, it just needs to be said in a different way, which prior political experience may have altered that.” Emery S, 19

“Yes, but if that were the case he would be far less interesting at a historic viewpoint. The whole experiment to his candidacy and presidency is someone with no military or political background being in the highest office of the land.” n/a, 22

“I think it is better that Trump was never a politician before this.” Stephen H, 25

8. Is there anything Trump has done while in office that has made you question his credibility?

“The fact that 34% of senior officials in the White House have quit, been fired, or resigned in his first year definitely makes me question his credibility. It makes me question his decisions as to who he brought on board as his staff as well as his qualities as a leader if so many people are ready to ‘jump ship’ so soon into his term.” Jennifer V, 44

“Not that I am aware of, he is pretty open with what he does.” Emery S, 19

“My only real issue was with the Ivory trade that happened a few weeks ago.” Jericka E, 18

“Nothing at all.” Stephen H, 25

9. Would you support Trump if he ran for re-election in 2020?

“Probably not. If the libertarian party gets its head out of its ass, I’ll vote them again, but unless a Paul runs I’ll never vote for an R or D.” n/a, 23

“It depends on what other candidates run and whether my beliefs align more with theirs than they do with Trump.” Emery S, 19

“100%” Jericka E, 18

“It is far too early to tell.” John P, 70

10. How do you feel the next three years will play out in regards to his approval ratings?

“I do not see his approval ratings improving over the next three years.” Jennifer V, 44

“Hopefully he will continue to do things as he has been in terms of his political actions. While also toning down is a rather radical way of saying things, and try to refine how he goes about thing.” Emery S, 19

“The approval ratings that are advertised are only politically convenient in the now, but once it is election night, it will be that poll that really matters.” n/a, 22

“I think approval ratings are a joke. The reason being that most of the polls done are biased in who they select to do the polls.” Stephen H, 25

11. Is there anything Trump has said or done which you do not agree with or support? If so, what?

“Not exactly. A lot of the stuff being pushed by the R's are inconsequential in the grand scheme of things and will be redone by the next president either in four or eight years. Just like it always is.” n/a, 23

“A lot of his comments on vaccines I do not agree with. He seems not to be very educated on those and tends to talk down on the effectiveness of them. A lot of his environmental stances I do not agree with as well.” Emery S, 19

“I didn't support it when he retweeted videos of people committing crimes who happened to be Muslim. I wish he was able to communicate the message of ‘Let's stop radical Islam from coming to America’ better than that because retweeting vague videos of Muslims committing crimes wasn't a very unifying message.” n/a, 22

“I love how he is still pushing for Border Security. I like that he is letting ICE and Border Patrol do their job. Last year was the first time I have seen Border Patrol in my area. They have doubled the agents to the south of me.” Stephen H, 25

12. Is there anything that you feel is misunderstood about Trump supporters?

“I think, and obviously this is my own opinion, that identity politics have taken such a hold on everybody that no one thinks rationally about each other. They hear the other side talking but aren't really listening. I think Trumpers are your average everyday people, just like I think people on the left are regular people as well. We really only differ on how we should go about the problems that plague our countries. They will have bad apples in the bunch just like all groups do.” n/a, 23

“The thing that I think is most misunderstood is that people think we support everything about President Trump. Many supporters agree with what he has to say, they don’t necessarily agree with how he has to say it. Trump supporters, for the most part, are not right-wing militants, Christian zealots, or haters of all things liberal. We support a president who shares our conservative viewpoints, supports our military, and who, we hope, will stabilize our economy.” Jennifer V, 44

“That we're all 100% supporters and are just as radical as he is.” Emery S, 19

“That we’re all misunderstanding, racist, white, idiots who don’t care about other people. Totally untrue.” Jericka E, 18

“The racist and ignorant people that are portrayed on shows like the Daily Show and what not do not represent the entire population of Trump supporters. Trump supporters just want to see people back to work, and we want to see our government put the priorities of the country first before any other country's.” n/a, 22

“If you supported Hillary, would that make you a shrill, lying, power-grubbing bitch beast who allowed her husband to use his position of power to seduce or assault young women? Supporting Trump does not transfer any of his purported faults to those of us who support him.” John P, 70

“People are going to paint a picture of those they don't agree with. You are going to have your crazies on both sides of the political spectrum, but in the end, the average supporter just wants what he or she thinks is best for the country at whole.

Here is the thing: Trump is just one part of a three part government we have. The United States of America is a Republic which benefits us as a whole. Our form of government isn't perfect, but it gives the minority a voice to be heard. In a democracy, the majority would be in control and determine the course of the country. Which is very dangerous if that majority doesn't agree or like the minority.” Stephen H, 25

As said before, a lot of people seem to fit people who support or agree with Trump into a certain stereotype.

It's easy to assume that because someone voted for Trump, they agree with him entirely.

Looking over some of these answers, it's easy to see that no two people are the same. Where some people agree, others disagree.

Just because someone voted for Trump doesn't mean they agree with everything he does or worship him -- both are ways supporters have been portrayed over the years now.

There is obviously a political divide in this country. It's time we start to understand that just because someone has different political views, it doesn't mean they're radicals and completely agree with their party's candidates.

Coming together is what can truly make America great.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
