The GOP debate this past week was something special. It is not every day that you get a debate quite as legendary as this one. With Super Tuesday coming up, the Republican Candidates were making last ditch attempts to gain votes to help their campaign for the White House. All of the candidates were forcing their points and stances home and they attacked anyone who stood in their way. It was a no-holds-barred type debate, and the entertainment it brought was phenomenal.
Before I get into the good stuff, I would just like to take a moment to commend John Kasich and Ben Carson for being real troopers out there. They were rarely asked questions and for most of the debate were not even in the camera shot. Yet despite this, they stood strong and answered the questions they were asked with pride. While they have absolutely zero shot of winning the nomination, they are sticking in there and not giving up. They are truly embodying the “never say die” mentality.
On to the good stuff. Super Tuesday can essentially decide the winner if a certain candidate gets enough votes, and with Trump leading by a considerable margin, there is a chance he could win the nomination over Cruz and Rubio. However, Rubio and Cruz clearly were determined not to let that happened. Thursday night, they came out swinging. Determined to bring down the Donald, Cruz and Rubio went after Trump with the fury of a thousand suns. They poked holes in all his arguments and attacked him relentlessly in theirs. In all actuality, Rubio was the one that went after Trump and Cruz, like the kid who said he would help his friend in the fight but just kind of stood there cheering his friend on. But nevertheless, they were relentless.
Now, going after the Donald is not something that one should take lightly. Just look at poor old Jeb (RIP). He went after the Donald and he got buried. Absolutely destroyed. Torn down to almost nothing. It was not pretty. It was almost sad. Trump has a way with insults that is almost magical. He is absolutely ruthless. Going in, Rubio and Cruz had to know that they were about to get torn apart like no other, so they had time to prepare. Hopefully, they prepared enough.
Since Rubio went after Trump the hardest, he received the brunt of the insults. Trump called Rubio a lightweight, a little kid, and most noticeably Mr. Meltdown. In addition to these insults, Trump made fun of Rubio of his excessive sweating and for his huge ears (a low blow but not untrue). Rubio however took these insults in stride, saying that Trump had to check to make sure his pants weren't wet during the debate and then making fun of his misspelled tweets. While Cruz escaped with simply being called a liar, a loser, and a basket case, he was the real loser in this. While Rubio valiantly stood up for himself, Cruz tried to stand up for himself, but wasn't very successful. Being called a basket case is a rough one to take. No one wants to be called a basket case.
To wrap it all up, I must say I have never been more excited for a debate than I am for the one on March 3. Even more phenomenal insults will be thrown around, and the entrainment value will be throughout the roof--unless Trump skips it because Megyn Kelly is the moderator. But if he doesn’t, Trump vs Kelly should be just as entertaining as Trump vs Rubio/Cruz. As put by the ever-scholarly Terrell Owens, “Get your popcorn ready.”
