The story of Delta Gamma begins in 1873 with three women, Eva, Mary, and Anna, who were snowed in at their school during Christmas break. The three women referred to DG as a club of “mutual helpfulness," a small organization that would be used to enhance the lives of its members. The chose the Greek letters Delta and Gamma to represent their hope to “Do Good," which is still the motto used today and the driving force for all DG members.
Fast forward to 1947, and the Gamma Zeta chapter of Delta Gamma was installed after the initiation of six LSU women. By the end of Gamma Zeta's first year, the chapter had grown to 20 members. Today, the Gamma Zeta chapter has grown to 316 amazing women, making it the third largest chapter of Delta Gamma in the country. A few Sundays back, the Gamma Zeta chapter of Delta Gamma and the Baton Rouge alumnae chapter gathered together to celebrate those three young women and the club they created on a cold Christmas Eve many years ago.
The program focused on celebrating this year's successes of the alumnae and collegiate chapter. The Baton Rouge alumnae chapter received two awards at the 2014 Delta Gamma Convention: Region 3 Excellence in Programming Innovation Award, and the Five Stars to Alumnae Success Award. The Region 3 Excellence in Programming Innovation Award is given to the alumnae chapter that shows outstanding programming, leadership and operation, achieving excellence. The Baton Rouge alumnae chapter has won this award several years in a row. The Five Stars to Alumnae Success Award is given to the chapter that exemplifies the Delta Gamma Philosophy. The alumnae chapter was also the national runner up (out of 32 chapters eligible) for the Collumnae Award-Local, which recognizes the alumnae chapter's relationship with a collegiate chapter.
The Gamma Zeta chapter of Delta Gamma is an award-winning chapter. At the 2014 Order of Omega Awards, a ceremony that recognized Greek organizations for outstanding chapter events, programs and service, the Gamma Zeta chapter received three awards: Outstanding PHC Chapter Event, Outstanding PHC Adviser Award and Outstanding PHC Sisterhood. At the 2014 Delta Gamma convention, LSU's DG chapter won The Most Outstanding Chapter in the Fraternity Award and The Founders Award.
Gamma Zeta also recognized individual chapter members for their commitment to the fraternity:
- Most Outstanding New Member: Marissa Torres (LOL I demand a recount)
- Most Outstanding Sophomore Member: Caroline Rodrigue
- Most Outstanding Junior Member: Victoria Roberts
- Most Outstanding Senior Member: Katelyn Gross
- Most Outstanding Member: Jennifer Tuohy
- Spectator Award: Catherine Pettus
- Celeste Robicheaux Sisterhood Award: Geena Marano
- Founders Award: Colleen Kimball
This year's Delta Gamma Founders Day was truly special; however, this will not be the best Founders Day for long. As each year passes, the alumnae and collegiate chapter in Baton Rouge improves, living the rituals created by three young women in 1873.
Tau Delta Eta, sisters!
