Trickle-Down Economics Has Never Helped The Economy And Never Will

Republicans don't believe in the benefits of trickle-down theory, they just want more money.

It really should come as no surprise that the Trump administration hasn’t been able to pass a single form of legislation. Even though Republicans have control of the House and Senate, Trump’s lack of experience in politics along with Paul Ryan’s lack of a soul make it almost impossible for them to pass anything.

However, the Republican tax reform, which would be the first major tax reform since Reagan, could be the first major legislation passed since Trump took office. Depending on where you obtain your news, this reform is either a necessary simplification of taxes that will create jobs across America or a huge tax break to the rich that will further the widening gap between the rich and the poor.

Now, I’m not going to claim to understand taxes or know the exact direction tax reform should take. But what I will claim to know is that giving tax breaks to the rich in no way, shape or form will help this country and that trickle-down economics is a fucking joke.

This theory gained popularity during Reagan’s presidency (1981-89) and would later be known as “Reaganomics.” The idea, I believe, is that by having big businesses and the rich pay less taxes, these rich people/businesses would have more money to put into the economy, and thus make it grow.

By letting the rich keep their money, it is ultimately up to them on how they want to spend their money. This means they can choose to keep their money, for there is no law that forces rich people to spend their money on something that will improve the economy.

Now, my question is why would we let the rich and corporations decide how to spend their money when the government could take their money and use it accordingly? If Republicans truly wanted to put money into the economy, couldn’t they just tax the rich and big businesses and reform the budget and use this money to put into the economy?

And therefore, I don’t understand how the government helping the economy is a bad thing. Republicans have always been in favor of free-market policies and talk about the evils of having the government influence the economy. But I frankly don’t understand how Republicans can be so against the government influencing the economy when they themselves are a part of this government. So you can see why I have trouble believing that proponents of the trickle-down theory actually want to help the economy.

The widening wage gap also makes it hard to believe that modern-day Republicans aren't a bunch of greedy assholes. Comparing the years 1979, just before Reagan was elected, to 2015, these stats

show how the top one percent has seen an income increase of 156 percent, while the bottom 90 percent has only seen a 21 percent increase. If these statistics are true, then Republicans must know that any changes made from 1979 have only been hurting the middle class, not helping them.

And this is why trickle-down is such a joke, for it’s obvious that no good comes from it, and it only helps the rich and corporations. The last time the Republicans had control of the House, Senate, and presidency was in 1928 which was, of course, followed by the Great Depression. I don’t think this will be the case this time, but I do believe Republicans are clueless when it comes to economics.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
