NOTICE: Trevor Noah pushes boundaries with his comedy, especially regarding race and nationalities. Anything deemed derogatory in this article is taken from Trevor Noah’s jokes, not my own.
“Jon Stewart was more than a late night host, he was our voice, our refuge. and in many ways he was our political dad. It’s weird because dad has left. And now it feels like the family has a new step dad… And he’s black, which is not ideal.” -Trevor Noah (Daily Show 9/28)
Trevor Noah, thirty-one year old comedian from South Africa, has officially been assigned as the new host of the Daily Show.
Son of a Swiss-German man and South African woman, Trevor Noah now fills the shoes, desk, and suit that the well-known Jon Stewart once filled for years. Last month, on September 28 at 11/10c Trevor Noah began his reign as the new “step-father” for the Daily Show. Noah’s first appearances as the host for the Daily Show brought many jokes about politics, race, and Ebola.
Noah’s history of growing up in South Africa with his mother brings a whole new perspective to his comedy. He jokes about things like traveling, the word “zebra”, and the journey to being called “black” in the United States. In his stand-up title, “Trevor Noah: African American” (available on Netflix), Noah discusses his experiences relating to various topics. In this stand-up 'movie' Trevor also jokes about the UNICEF commercials that “inaccurately” show Africa to the world.
When Trevor Noah was brought to the Daily Show he discusses timely news like the Pope’s visit to Philadelphia, white house officials stepping down, prison reforms and pro-life arguments taking place around the country. Noah even brings guests like Seth Rogan (10/5), Kevin Hart (9/28), and Chris Christie (9/30) to the show to talk about popular topics.
“First of all this is surreal to me, … growing up in the dusty streets of Africa, I never dreamed that I would one day have, well, two things, really: an indoor toilet, and a job as the host of the daily show, and now I have both. And I’m quite comfortable with one of them…”
So, how do we like Trevor Noah as the new host?
According to Nielsen TV ratings, 29,397 tweets were made about the first appearance Trevor Noah had as host. An estimated amount of 37% of those tweets were positive and another 26% of them were "thankful" for Trevor Noah's new and interesting spike to the show. (from the LA Times Article, by SABA HAMEDY)
I, for one, absolutely loved seeing Trevor Noah become the new host for the Daily Show. I saw some of his stand-up comedy on Netflix about a two to three months ago and loved it from the start. He seems to be successfully advancing in his career, especially for starting at the age of 18 in a soap opera in South Africa. He has come a long way!
