So, the romance of this year’s Valentine’s Day hasn’t worked exactly as you planned, and now you hope to spend the holiday with a tub of ice cream, laced in tears of self-pity and gloom. Well, dear readers, before you invest in the comforting hugs of Ben & Jerry’s, consider one final date: yourself.
The dating towel is too often thrown in before one can consider the true happiness that comes from the dating duo of one. Think about it: who could possibly be more similar to you, than you? For all those single bodies out there, remember that there is no other being that deserves your respect more than yo do, as you must understand your own self-worth before you can learn to love another human being. This Valentine’s day, pick yourself up from the clutches of dramatic melancholy and treat yo self!
From shopping, to enjoying your own guilty pleasures, treat yo'self day is a day where you place yourself as the center of attention, tending to every want and need that your own inner self craves. Coined by the lively characters, Tom and Donna, from Amy Poehler’s hit comedy "Parks and Recreation," treat yo'self day consists of relinquishing yourself to your own materialistic cravings, allowing for a self-spoiling that is both rewarding and therapeutic. If this were a legal holiday, the world would possibly encompass individuals that are happier with their own individual selves.
Of course, to treat yourself is subjective to each individual. This is most significant to the purpose of the day, as it is all about discovering what works for you, and what you most appreciate within your own personality. For example, my itinerary would compose of no less than two platters of Mediterranean food, enjoyed with nails, freshly manicured, as well as a bag full of new and exciting books (don’t sneer; I have to treat my inner nerd, too!)
To further embody the development of your individual self, you must first recognize all the elements and desires that your character is made up of. Do you prefer to be pampered at a spa, or by loosening up with fun entertainment? Is food on the ‘treat yo self’ agenda? (Because I know for a fact it would be a fundamental component to mine!) By understanding these desires, you can learn to accept the fundamental aspects of yourself that truly epitomize your being. This exercise will most certainly develop your preparedness to enter a mature and successful relationship. So whether that includes a date for one at your favorite restaurant, or simply kicking up your feet and relaxing for the night, remember to treat yourself to what you most appreciate in life. Now go out there, my ducklings, and don't forget to...
