How Traveling Locally Takes You Further Than You Know

If there were a couple of activities that I would chose to do as often as possible if I have had an unlimited budget, one of those things would be to travel. Traveling is a fun and creative way to get out of you comfort zone, and learn new things that you didn’t know about yourself. Personally, I have had the blessing of visiting around fifteen states (not counting the ones I’ve flow or drove through) and visiting four foreign countries with my family and friends.

While I don’t get to travel very often, I’m very lucky that my family has the financial stability to travel the way I’ve traveled, and be able to experience amazing things while I travel. I know from experience however, that I truly am a luck person to have traveled to the places that I have. Most people I talk to have much different travel experiences than I, and more often than not, they have had less experience than I have. Strangely, a lot of these people have very well-developed ideas/thoughts of where they would like to travel, and some of them seem to know exactly what they would do. if they visited said place.

Some claim financial reasons are one of the main reasons they don’t travel, while others claim they can’t travel due to school/career/work or other busy aspects of their lives. The reality is, is that you can receive the benefits of traveling such as more open-mindedness and a different perspective, and without actually having to go to some exotic country. Traveling can be as simple as going to a place you have never been to before in your home state or area, and it can involve doing things that you do nearly every day. It won’t cost you much to do these things, and will give you a different perspective and your life in front of you. Here are some suggestions as to what you can do without having to spend tons of money and can actually improve your mindset at the same time.

1.Gather some research on your area/state and visit local points of interest:

Something that surprise me about the current state I live in (Minnesota), is that there are so many things that you can do and see that are still things that I haven’t done in my time. Even though I grew up in the Twin Cities (Minneapolis/Saint Paul) area where new things are happening every day, I am amazed by the number of interesting places/areas I have never heard of before all across the globe. I have at times gone on the internet and looked at places in Minnesota, and I was amazed by the number of things I could find outside the cities that looked fun and entertaining.

In fact, I admit that some of my favorite traveling experiences have to do with visiting parts of Minnesota that I have not yet seen. The reality is, is that traveling is meant to be a way of opening up the mind to possibly different scenarios. When we see the same people, things, buildings every day, it is easy to get caught up in your own world and start developing an unrealistic prospective on things. Traveling is a good way to get out of that mindset, and it can be as simple as leaving your home in the suburbs or country to go visit the “big city” next to you, or vice versa. In the end, traveling is meant to be a creative option for everyone to enjoy. If you start looking at your options around you by using local resources, you can find places that you will cost you very little, and will still give you the opportunity to explore.

2.Find alternative methods of transportation besides planes/ cars to get to places:

Something that I constantly hear people groan about when it comes to traveling, is the amount of money it takes to travel by plane or car. The price of plane tickets, gas money, passports, baggage, and other items often discourage people to travel to a new location outside of their town or state. Since prices in generally vary depending on availability, location, and the growth of the economy, people who have little spending money on things outside of the basic needs often times don’t travel.

There is however, other alternative options to traveling by car or plane. Despite the commonality of cars/planes, it might be a fun alternative to try to travel by bus or train. Bus/train fare is often a much cheaper option than plane tickets or gas money, and gives you a different outlook on transportation/people. I admit that while some buses/trains comes with its own issues, it will more or less be cheaper than alternative options. By getting into the mindset that you have various different options for transportation, it will be a lot easier for you to get out of your comfort zone and explore different places.

3.Take The Time To Recognize What You Want Out of Traveling

I think that something that most people think about when it comes to traveling, is that traveling is a luxury that is only enjoyed by the privileged/wealthy. If you have the money to take cool, exotic trips with your private jet or drive your luxury cars, then that’s great for you, but there are a lot of great ways to experience traveling without any of that. Traveling is a great way to broaden your horizon, which is a common human desire. There is a reason why companies/bosses give workers paid vacations as a part of a perks package or when a worker is stressed out from their massive workload.

Traveling provides a release from common everyday stresses, and gives you something new to think about beside the usual routine. This type of break should be seen as something that’s healthy, and should be engaged in when possible. If you are having doubts about traveling when you know you need a break, understand that you deserve to live a healthy life. If you feel that traveling is going to provide you with that kind of release, you should by all means do it. If you’re looking to travel for reasons beyond just entertainment and release, understand that there is no shame in wanting something different in your life. Understanding what you want out of traveling and how it can affect your health, is something important that you should consider in making a choice about traveling or not.

By following these three pieces of advice, you will find that you don’t need to travel super far to get some kind of benefit from your travel experience. That being said, if you have the opportunity to travel somewhere far way such as a foreign country or state, I would highly encourage you to take up that opportunity. No matter where you decide to travel, the effects that traveling can have on your mind can help you be more productive at work, school, home, or just life in general. All in All, traveling is something that is universally healthy to the brain, and you should reward yourself according for wanting to travel!

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
