As a college student, we’re told that we have our entire lives in front of us.
That's true, but when you’re sitting in lecture with the monotonous tone of your teacher hovering above you, it seems like time is moving at half its normal speed. I tend to drift off into thoughts of nothingness – thinking about what I could be doing or where I should be.
Moments like this have raced through my mind, but the one idea that always comes flooding back is traveling.
Not just traveling in the sense of a study abroad program, but I mean really traveling.
Absorbing yourself in the culture, the people, scenery – everything.
This is all coming from a person who has never set foot outside the United States, but I’ve wondered what it’s like: the thought of the smells, the tastes, and the differences from the familiar life we live.
We have the Grand Canyon, the Golden Gate Bridge, the Space Needle, Yellowstone National Park, and the Las Vegas Strip. Among those attractions, sprinkled throughout the U.S. are hundreds of worldwide known cities like Chicago, New York City, Seattle ... the list goes on.
I’ve seen the U.S., maybe not all of it, but enough to want more – and that’s just it. I’m sure those individuals who have been abroad, seen the world, traveled it and experienced something new, must have a feeling or sense of accomplishment.
That's what I want. I want to go out of my comfort zone in a place I’ve never been before, surrounded by people that might not even speak the same language as me. That's exciting, but I'd be lying if I said I wasn't nervous too. Being in a new country that is unfamiliar could be scary, and is an entirely new experience in itself.
Is it going to be the ultimate payoff that I’ve been expecting since I was little?
And if it’s not, then what?
How do you fulfill a want that has been driving you since you were old enough to even have it? That sense of adventure is what drives people like myself. I'm always wanting more, dreaming of more and believing that a new scenery, a new home, a new "world" could be that it factor that you’re looking for.
I’m prepared to take a risk in a new place and maybe even discover something new about myself.
I’ve always heard that when you go abroad you uncover something special. And even if I don’t, going somewhere like that just makes sense to me even if I’ve done it.
Having the drive to do well in life, to have the opportunity to travel for your work, or even to be one of those ridiculous Instagram icons who just travel constantly and seem to have the best life; How’re they even doing that?
Regardless, the world outside of the U.S. excites me.
I know nothing about it, I would be going into it "blind" – I would be traveling for the experience, for the chance to see the world through eyes that crave it.
My eyes.
