I was thrown into the world of college about a month ago. Completely unaware of what kind of responsibility I was about to behold, I have say... I've been struggling, but still striving. I can say that in my experience being here, although short, I've taken in a lot of things that are drastic changes from high school. Some are good and some are bad, but everything somehow strangely intertwines (perfectly) into the most amazing experiences you'll ever have.
1. Sitting alone at the dining hall
Normally in high school, if you're sitting alone at a table alone, everyone assumes you have no friends or you're just weird. But in college, people know that either all your friends are in class, you just came for the bagel or pizza you were craving, or you're just desperate for food and too broke to pay for it.
2. No one cares what you wear.
The only day anyone would wear pajamas to class was the appropriately titled day- pajama day. You know, the day that everyone would actually buy cute pajamas for. But when you have an 8 a.m. and wake up 10 minutes before it everyday, every day is pajama day.
3. Studying is a real thing.
If we're being honest here, I've never picked up a book and had intentions of studying. Until I went to college. You'll fight it at first, and then realize how lost you are and you NEED it. And then when you can't get your practice problems right it feels like an infinite loop of hell.
4. But when you get the good grade back on the exam, it'll feel like you just won a Grammy.
Yes, you can tell your parents. And dance around a little bit. The feeling of pride and your efforts paying off is hard to surmount. Maybe say a quick thank you for the lord answering your prayers. No one will judge you.
5. You actually start to appreciate things from home.
I miss the days when my laundry hamper would fill and I didn't have to worry about all the loads piling up for me... and when I could eat a nice home cooked meal without having to move... And I don't know about you guys, but I've found myself hungry in class DREAMING of a good bagel from my hometown deli (preferably, bacon egg and cheese... New York problems).
6. Not having any upcoming assignments is a rarity AND blessing.
High school really did not prepare me for college in the least. I can't even believe I had the audacity to believe that high school work was hard. Because unless you're endlessly working diligently during the week, you always have some sort of work haunting you and your plans for your day. Or maybe you're just that person who busts out the essay right before it's due at 11:59.
7. And lastly, no one is going to judge you.
A university is a very complex place, and there are people of all lives and origins. No one here will judge you on your outward appearance, financial situation, or whatever else you're worried about speculation on. We're all half falling apart and broke guys, it's okay. The best part is that we're all a family and experiencing it together.
