Yes, I Really Should Be Concerned About Toxins In My Beauty Products

At first, I wasn't so sure.

Yes, I Really Should Be Concerned About Toxins In My Beauty Products

It has recently come to my attention that there are a lot of "toxins" in all the everyday products I use for my skin, hair, and makeup. I have extremely sensitive skin and have been seeing a dermatologist since infancy so I thought my products were safe. I have always used incredibly gentle products, and when I would venture to some of the more "fun" scented products I would break out in eczema so I quickly decided it wasn't worth the trouble. Using only the gentlest products, often those for babies, had to be safe right? Turns out that is not the case.

I have heard people talk about toxins, phalthates, and dyes in products and how they have carcinogens, cancer-causing substances, in them. I thought that those people were overly cautious and I ignored them for months. Well I kept seeing companies I love in the news for toxins in their products and I got more and more apprehensive.

I found out that our beauty products are barely monitored in the United States when compared to other countries. The US only bans 11 chemicals of the 1,000 that France bans. And the US-based nonprofit the Environmental Defense Fund tested American makeup and found lead, arsenic, and other heavy metals.

As I read the research about the synthetic materials that could be affecting my body I began to pay attention. I followed some social media accounts about natural products and I began to read labels. On lotions, nail polish, shampoo, makeup, even the essential oils I ordered from Amazon that said 100% pure.

As I learned more about toxins, I also learned about essential oils and how they could replace many of the synthetic products and that plenty of people got comparable, or even better results from natural products, so I began to do extensive research. Turns out there are toxins in just about everything. Many of the things that contain toxins are outside of my control, but beauty products contain more toxins than I imagined and I can absolutely control what I am using to take care of my body.

After extensive research, various opinions, and time, I have decided to begin switching to non-toxic, natural products. I hope you will do your own research and choose to switch too.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
