College Is Great But...

Things you miss about home while you're in college.

College Is Great But...

We all come to a point in our day where we think of things we miss about home. Although everyone may miss something different, you can't deny that once in a while you just want to take a quick trip home for whatever it is you find yourself missing. Going to college, you definitely learn to appreciate all the things that you have back home and coming home from college becomes more of a holiday. Here are a couple of things that most college kids can agree that they miss.

1. Food

Coming home almost feels as if you're coming home to a 5 star restaurant. Of course you can go out to eat while at college but nothing compares to your moms cooking or your favorite restaurants from home. Of course there are those froyo places at school and salad places at school that are "like" the ones at home, but they don't compare.

2. Your bed

You can try and try to make your twin XL college bed into something comfortable but it will never compare to your bed at home. At home I call my bed "my princess bed" and nothing will ever compare to it. Coming home from break and sleeping in your bed after a long time can be your melatonin replacer.

3. Soft toilet paper

If you've never thought of this, now you will. The toilet paper in college is literally sandpaper. You're going to miss that Charmin.

4. Dogs

Although I do not personally have a puppy, this is a huge one for most people who do. Having a dog is like having a best friend and not seeing your puppy is heartbreaking. Even though I do not have a dog, I find myself missing my friends dogs.

5. Showers (with no shower shoes)

The concept of going to shower with shoes on is a hard one to understand. I remember coming home for my first time from college I went into the shower with my flip flops. Coming home to a clean shower and not having to wear shoes is a great feeling.

6. Having someone to help you when you're sick

Being sick at school at least for me is the worst. You feel alone and you're not sure what medicine to take and how much to take of it. None of moms chicken noodle soup or mom checking if you have a fever.

7. Friends from home

No matter how much you get annoyed at them, you love them and you find yourself missing them. Those inside jokes only your home friends understand are no longer understood at college.

8. Family

Obviously talking to your mom 3 times a day like I do isn't for everyone but everyone misses there family at some point. Unlike me where finding a reason to come home and see my family is always occurring, for others coming home for holiday breaks is always an exciting time.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
