This past Sunday, Pastor Paul spoke on the topic of the time immediately after Jesus' return from the dead and how his followers did not believe the good news right away.
As they sat down to eat, he took the bread and blessed it. Then he broke it and gave it to them. Suddenly their eyes were opened, and they recognized him… -- Luke 24:30-31
The disciples believed then, that the Lord they had left their lives to follow for years and watched die on the cross, had risen from the dead. We as Christians are usually called crazy for believing such truths. So here is the top five crazy truths from the Bible we believe:
5. The Talking Serpent:
The serpent was the shrewdest of all the wild animals the Lord God had made. One day he asked the woman, “Did God really say you must not eat the fruit from any of the trees in the garden?” -- Genesis 3:1
4. From Woman to Salt:
When they were safely out of the city, one of the angels ordered, “Run for your lives! And don’t look back or stop anywhere in the valley! Escape to the mountains, or you will be swept away!” -- Genesis 19:17
Lot reached the village just as the sun was rising over the horizon. Then the Lord rained down fire and burning sulfur from the sky on Sodom and Gomorrah. He utterly destroyed them, along with the other cities and villages of the plain, wiping out all the people and every bit of vegetation. But Lot’s wife looked back as she was following behind him, and she turned into a pillar of salt. -- Genesis 19:23-26
3. Flooding of the World:
Then the Lord saw that the wickedness of man was great on the earth, and that every intent of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. The Lord was sorry that He had made man on the earth, and He was grieved in His heart. The Lord said, "I will blot out man whom I have created from the face of the land, from man to animals to creeping things and to birds of the sky; for I am sorry that I have made them." But Noah found favor in the eyes of the Lord. -- Genesis 6:5-8
2. Jonah Swallowed by Fish:
Then the men feared the Lord greatly, and they offered a sacrifice to the Lord and made vows. And the Lord appointed a great fish to swallow Jonah, and Jonah was in the stomach of the fish three days and three nights. -- Jonah 1:16-17
1. Jesus Defeats Death
On the first day of the week, very early in the morning, the women took the spices they had prepared and went to the tomb. They found the stone rolled away from the tomb, but when they entered, they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus. While they were wondering about this, suddenly two men in clothes that gleamed like lightning stood beside them. In their fright the women bowed down with their faces to the ground, but the men said to them, “Why do you look for the living among the dead? He is not here; he has risen! Remember how he told you, while he was still with you in Galilee: “The Son of Man must be delivered over to the hands of sinners, be crucified and on the third day be raised again.” -- Luke 24: 1-7
Christians are crazy, and as I am a Christian I feel OK admitting that. We believe in these stories from the Bible, and follow the Bible as our way of life. While we might be crazy, we also know that our eternal life with God is secure and we will not fail with him on our side, no matter how crazy we are.
God is within her, she will not fail.
-- Psalm 46:5
