Every summer is filled with new and exciting music. I am always up checking all of the music charts to see what is new. I always seem to disagree with the world’s selection of “top songs”. This article is a take on what I think are the top 6 songs of the summer of 2016.
1. "Same Drugs" by Chance the RapperThe mixtape “Coloring Book” was dropped on May 13th, which included the song “Same Drugs.” While the entire mixtape is amazing, “Same Drugs” speaks the most to me. Chance sings lines such as “We don’t do the same drugs no more... I was too late, I was too late. A shadow of what I once was...” He uses the idea of drugs as representations of their lives. The “different drugs that they’re doing” are just different paths the two are taking in their lives.
2. "Dangerous Woman" by Ariana Grande
Dangerous Woman was featured on Ariana’s new album, Dangerous Woman. The song is so empowering to listen to. The lines “Don't need permission, Made my decision, to test my limits. 'Cause it's my business, God as my witness...” She reminds all of the young listeners that you don’t need to ask anyone to be yourself, and you are the only one who can control you.
3. "Young and In Love" by 888
I have just recently seen 888 live at the 104.5 Blockparty show. They were amazing. I went in not knowing any of their music and came out with their music downloaded onto my phone. You and In Love was on 888’s new EP, “Critical Mistakes.” The chorus of “We were young and in love, We don't have to explain, Let the world pass by, It'll die anyway” is very relatable to teenagers. As teenagers, we do wild things that we will later laugh about, simply because we are young and we are in love. This song is an anthem to the Summer of 16’ for me, for it is my last summer before I leave for college next year.
4. "Dang!" by Mac Miller
Dang! was an early release from Mac Miller’s new album, “The Divine Feminine,” which is supposedly being released sometime in September. This song has a very old fashion feel to it, and I really like it. The song is featuring Anderson .Paak. I am a huge fan of Mac Miller and Anderson .Paak collaborating, and I hope to hear more of the two of them in the future.
5. "Bohemian Rhapsody" by Panic! At the Disco
Although it is a cover of Queen’s song, Bohemian Rhapsody with the vocals of Brendon Urie seems to be like a glimpse of heaven. Urie’s vocal range can touch the dead sea, and shoot up to the top of Mount Everest. An already perfect song by Queen is brought back to life by Urie. I was surprised to hear how good it was, considering it was pretty hard to remake a song be just as good as an already amazing song. This song can be found on the new soundtrack of “Suicide Squad."
6. "Closer" by The Chainsmokers feat. Halsey
This song is an automatic thumbs up considering it is featuring Halsey. “So baby pull me closer in the backseat of your Rover, That I know you can't afford. Bite that tattoo on your shoulder, Pull the sheets right off the corner of the mattress that you stole from your roommate back in Boulder. We ain't ever getting older.” The song’s lyrics show the understanding that one lover has for the other when it comes to personal issues, and that is the type of person we all need.
