Sometimes I listen to a musical on Spotify or Youtube, and I get super interested in it. Then, I'll go talk to a friend and mention the musical, and usually they say they haven't heard of the title, or they didn't even bother to hear it out. Some of my favorite musicals/songs that are on the lesser side of the spectrum include...
1. Titanic
This musical opened on Broadway in 1997, and it has some of my favorite performers in the original cast, including Michael Cerveris and Brian D'Arcy James. I got into this musical when my director suggested it for a spring show, and although we never did it, I still find it on my iPod to sing to once in a while. The music has a more classic style, but it is definitely something I could listen to on repeat right now. The cast reunited two years ago and did a one night concert selection of the show. Titanic won five Tony awards, including Best Musical. Favorite songs: "Barrett's Song," "Lady's Maid" and "Autumn/Finale."
The whole cast crying while watching this really makes me remember how impactful beautiful theatre can be to everyone.
2. Tommy
This was written by the Who about their album, Tommy. If you love classic rock, this is the show for you. My aunt introduced me to this show, and I thought it was so cool that the band incorporated their music into a Broadway production (I was in sixth grade and still new to shows when I found this show). Michael Cerveris was in the original cast, which made it even ten times better for me. Warning: This one is not the best for kids. Favorite songs: "I'm Free," "Pinball Wizard" and "See Me, Feel Me (reprise)."
Most people know this song, but isn't it awesome to hear it in a musical?
3. Hands on a Hardbody
This is about a group of people competing in a contest. Whoever holds their hand on the truck the longest wins the vehicle. It follows the stories of all the contestants and why they are competing. The music has some fun, jamming songs that you'll find yourself slapping the beat to, but it also has some beautiful songs that give you insight into each character's head. Favorite songs: "Stronger," "Joy of the Lord" and "If I Had This Truck."
This is one of the slower songs from the show, but I LOVE it. I could listen to this song all day.
4. Wedding Singer
This show is a personal favorite of mine. This was basically all that I listened to this summer. If you love the movie, you will love the musical. Not only does it have some of the songs from the movie built into the broadway production, but it adds some killer music in there as well. You will get major 80s vibes from this show, and you're going to want to put on your best leg warmers. Favorite songs: "Not That Kind of Thing," "Come out of the Dumpster" and "Saturday Night in the City."
This song just makes me want to put on some neon clothes and dance and sing my heart out, which I definitely do.
5. Ghost
There is not a single song in this show that was not beautifully written. I performed in this show last year at my high school, and this show is such a reminder of how powerful and beautiful music can really be. If you have seen the movie, you know this musical will play with your emotions. I cried every single night in the wings at the end of this show, and you will cry listening to it. I can't describe how much I love the music from this show. Oda Mae's songs are pretty lit too. This is also one of the shows where I could listen to the overture and cry because it is so beautiful. Favorite songs: "Are You A Believer," "Suspend my Disbelief" and "Focus."
I cannot think of a better Act One Finale than this song. It is so good. so good.
Although you may have heard of many of these, I feel like these shows sometimes do not get the credit they deserve. I love all these shows so much, and there is so many I could of chose, but some people would probably disagree that they are underrated and such. And if you're reading this and have more musicals you would love to suggest, totally tell me! The only music I ever listen to is show-tunes, and I am not even embarrassed.
