As free agency has winded down and the 2017 draft is approaching us on April 27th my hopeful yet pitiful New York Jets have the 6th pick in this years draft and you have to wonder, who the heck are the Jets going to pick? Here are my top five players I think the New York Jets should draft.
5 - Leonard Fournette, LSU
This is one bad man. Leonard Fournette is a whopping 6'1", 240lbs running back from LSU. Fournette has unbelievable speed running a 4.51 in this years scouting combine. Fournette is a bulldozer on the field scoring 40 touchdowns in 32 games and averaged 6.2 yards per carry. He is 100% NFL ready, but the only downside of drafting Fournette is the Jets are already stacked in the backfield with Matt Forte and Bilal Powell.
4 - O.J. Howard, Alabama
When Chan Gailey was the offense of coordinator for the New York Jets the tight end position was not used at all. Now that Gailey is retired and the Jets have a new offense of coordinator, who is open to a new offensive scheme, should consider looking into getting a tight end in this years draft. O.J. Howard, standing at a towering 6'6", is a Power house tight end with fantastic hands and speed, his game reminds me of Jimmy Graham and a player like this will definitely help the Jets spread the ball out down the field.
3 - Haason Reddick, Temple
One of many needed to fill positions for the New York Jets is an outside linebacker and Haason Reddick is that man. Reddick is such a dynamic athlete who led the league in tackles for a loss,(22.5), and 10 sacks in his senior year which is unheard of. He would fit very well in Todd Bowles' hybrid defensive scheme. Keep an eye out for Hasson Reddick as any team will not be upset by picking him in this draft.
2 - Mike Williams, Clemson
Mike Williams the 6'3" wide receiver from Clemson, who led the ACC for total receptions (95), is the most consistent wide receiver in this draft. Williams is an excellent route runner with smooth, strong hands that the Jets desperately need after losing Brandon Marshall to the New York Giants and having an injury prone Eric Decker, this is a no brainer.
1 - Cordrea Tankersley, Clemson
Well, aren't you surprised that I didn't pick a quarterback for the 6th pick, that's because there's a better option in the 2nd - 3rd round if he's still available, Patrick Mahomes, but let's save that for a different discussion.
Cordrea Tankersly, a cornerback from Clemson, is going to be a major key for the New York Jets biggest gap. Tankersly in my opinion has the most awareness of where the ball is for a cornerback in this draft class. At 6'1" he has a phenomenal reach totaling 9 interceptions in his Junior and senior year, this will be the best option for the New York Jets hands down.
So these are my top five picks for the 2017 NFL draft for the New York Jets, hopefully the Jets won't be that much of a disappointment this year, but a boy can only dream.
