On a cold, dreary, winter day, there is nothing more appealing to me than snuggling up in my bed with a warm fuzzy blanket, a grande Starbucks Veranda blend coffee, and Netflix. Netflix has become so engrained in our culture, staying in to watch it can often times rival going to class or even going downtown. It is the perfect way to procrastinate, hide away from the real world and escape into whichever dramatic life you wish to watch.
If you are not already in the middle of seven different series, or even if you are and are looking to bump up your Netflix resume a bit, here my absolute favorite five series on Netflix.
5. Orange is the New Black. This story follows the main character, Piper Kerman, an upper-middle class white New Yorker, through her journey surviving a 15-month sentence in federal prison. Piper was convicted for smuggling international drug money for her former girlfriend, Alex Vause. Ten years after the event, Piper is engaged to an adorably dorky Jewish writer, selling a luxury soap line with her best friend, and leading a quiet life. Although the series has a few graphic lesbian hook-up scenes, it is an extremely interesting and different story.
4. House. This medical drama follows an incredibly brilliant doctor who is dependent on pain killers and has a very unconventional way of practicing medicine. The series is set in New Jersey at Princeton Plainsboro Teaching Hospital. Dr. House is the doctor who can solve the unsolvable. However, his morals and mental state are questionable, and quite frankly, he is a jackass and does not care who knows it. This show is witty, with great character development, and is much more than just another medical drama.
3. Gilmore Girls. This show transports me back to my middle school years sitting on the couch in my basement with my friends from school, wondering who Rory will end up with, how she will endure her teenage trials, and what witty back-and-forth she and her mom will have next. This is a very wholesome, all-American chick show that requires chocolate ice cream and a good red wine with every viewing. It is set in a small town, Stars Hollow, Conn., and follows a single mom, Lorelai Gilmore, and her teenage daughter, Rory, though their fun-filled and charming life.
2. House of Cards. This is a political drama set in Washington, D.C. that follows the power couple, Frank and Claire Underwood. Frank is a Democrat from South Carolina and serves as the House majority whip; Claire is the head of a clean water philanthropic organization. This series is full of manipulation, power struggles, and the constant battle of justifying doing wrong for the greater good.
1. Breaking Bad. Also known as the greatest series ever written. The characters are incredible, the writing is very clever, and the story is dramatic and thought through from beginning to end. Breaking Bad follows a high school chemistry teacher, Walt Whitman, from his average boring life in Albuquerque, N. Mex. to his life as the greatest methamphetamine producer in the southwest. You watch Walt turn from a hero trying to provide for his family, to an anti-hero you love to hate. This show is, by far, my favorite series I have ever watched. Once you finish the series, you can keep your love for the show going by watching the spin-off, Better Call Saul!
