When it comes to music, I know what I am talking about for the most part. I did not mean for that to sound like I am very important or very pretentious (I'm quoting "Back to Back.") I have a very eclectic taste in music. But, right now I am going to talk about Drake. Drake is literally straight fire right now. On February 13, 2015, Drake released his album “If You’re Reading This It’s Too Late.” I was a Drake fan before this album came out, but after I heard the songs from this album, I was able to officially call him my favorite rapper. As you may or may not know, a couple days ago the mixtape “What A Time To Be Alive” by Drake and Future was released. What is great about Drake is that you never know when he is going to drop an album. With the whole Meek Mill vs. Drake controversy, Drake dropped three awesome Instagram-caption-worthy singles that hit the top charts. There are those songs that everyone should listen to by Drake. Here are some of my favorite Drake songs that truly make Drake the best rapper:
1. "Best I Ever Had"
This is one of the oldies by Drake. "Best I Ever Had" came out in 2009 and is still one of Drake’s best songs. The beat is really good; it's one of the best you will ever have.
2. "Started From The Bottom"
Well, this song certainly started a lot of hashtags and captions. This song is really inspiring and tells the story of Drake’s progress. Drake used to be an actor on the show "Degrassi," and now he is one of the best rappers of all time. This song is not too overwhelming. What I admire about Drake is that his lyrics mean something, and he is not just rattling off words that rhyme with each other, like a lot of other rappers do.
3. "Marvin’s Room"
At the beginning of the song, you will probably think that your iPhone is broken and that your music isn’t working. It starts out very soft with a voice that sounds like a phone call. This is the calmest rap song I have ever heard. Drake can be a singer as well as a rapper, and I appreciate that. In this song, I would consider Drake more of a singer than a rapper. Every one of Drake’s songs has individuality, and every song is different.
4. "Know Yourself"
This song is from Drake’s “If You’re Reading This It’s Too Late” album. This song is actually my favorite from that album. One of the big reasons I like this song is because it refers to "running through the six with your woes," which makes me think of the 607, where I currently live. There are also a few inspirational lyrics in this song. I mean, “I’ve always been me, I guess I know myself.” Pretty inspirational and meaningful, right?
5. "6 God"
This is another excellent song from “If You’re Reading This It’s Too Late.” I’m the real 6 God, boy. This song just gets you hyped. It’s just a fun song that you need to listen to.
6. "Energy"
"I got enemies, got a lot of enemies, got a lot of people trying to drain me of this energy." Seriously though, “If You’re Reading This It’s Too Late” is the best album that Drake has released. Most of my favorite Drake songs are from that album.
7. "Legend"
"Oh my God, oh my God, if I die I’m a legend." Again, this is from “If You’re Reading This It’s Too Late.” This is the album opener, and it is definitely a great opening song to introduce the rest of the album.
8. "0 To 100 / The Catch Up"
I love this song for many reasons. It pumps me up and gets you fired up. It is a great pre-workout or workout song. I mean, who doesn’t want to go 0 to 100 real quick? I also really appreciate the song because my favorite rapper (Drake) refers to my favorite basketball player, Steph Curry, in the song.
9. "Back to Back"
"Oh man, oh man, oh man, not again." This was one of the singles that was released during the whole Meek Mill vs. Drake battle. Clearly, Drake won. He released this song along with two others that I will mention after this.
10. "Hotline Bling"
"You used to call me on my cell phone, late night when I need your love." Hotline Bling has a weird tropical -like beat, but it is actually surprisingly good and catchy. I don’t know how many times a day I just randomly blurt out, “Ever since I left the city you.” I know it does not really make sense, but you will catch yourself singing the song for no reason whatsoever. Or maybe that that is just me that does that. Well, this is awkward.
11. "Right Hand"
We all have that person who is our right-hand, our go-to. This song reminds you that you always have people who are there for you. Even Drake has a right-hand.
12. "Take Care"
Drake and Rihanna took on this song together. It is another chill and slower rap song. It is a classic and an oldie. It is just a respectable song that brings back memories of Drake’s older songs.
I hope you enjoy all these songs. I know these aren’t even a quarter of Drake’s best songs. Honestly, I like all of his songs for different reasons. However, these are some good ones to start listening to if you have not already heard them. Even if you aren’t the biggest rap fan or Drake fan, give it a chance. Your opinions on things can change day to day.
