The Hateful Eight

Everyone loves a great movie, but they are often hard to come by. Even though 2015 is coming to a close, there are still many great movies scheduled to drop soon, and the year 2016 looks very promising for new films. Next year's movie lineup is headlined by new DiCaprio and Tom Hardy performances, Tarantino's 8th highly-anticipated film and a motion picture of an all-time childhood classic. Here are the top 11 movies that every movie junky should keep a tab on.

1. The Revenant (December 25th, 2015)

Directed by Alejandro Ganzález Iñárritu, Leonardo DiCaprio and Tom Hardy star in a Western/Adventure/Drama based on the true story of Hugh Glass (DiCaprio) in the 1820's. In exploring the western frontier, Glass is mauled by a grizzly bear and left for dead by his team. Betrayed, wounded and struggling to survive in the lands of violent Native Americans, Glass is driven by rage to find the team that abandoned him and seek revenge, especially on his previously-trusted companion, John Fitzgerald (Hardy). I'm a huge Leo and Tom Hardy fan, and Hugh Glass is an absolute savage for what he endured (look him up), so I have very high expectations for this one. See the trailer here.

2. The Big Short (December 23rd, 2015)

Director Adam McKay takes Michael Lewis's non-fiction book The Big Short: Inside the Doomsday Machine to Hollywood with the help of many stars, including Brad Pitt, Christian Bale, Steve Carell and Ryan Gosling. Four outsiders see through the greedy illusion created by the too-big-to-fail banks during the housing and credit bubble in 2000, and as a team, they decide to dive into the deep world of banking to take on the big banks on Wall Street. With an ambitious investment idea and no one to trust but each other, these four outsiders that saw what no one else saw must find their way through the dark, cut-throat world of modern banking and take on the big shots. See the trailer here.

3. The Hateful Eight (January 8th, 2016)

Directed by the one and only Quentin Tarantino, The Hateful Eight takes place a few years after the end of the Civil War in Wyoming. With a similar vibe to Djano Unchained, bounty hunter John Ruth (Russel) is en route to Red Rock with his fugitive Daisy Domergue (Leigh), where she will be brought to justice for a reward. Along the way, Ruth crosses paths with a former union soldier and current bounty hunter (Samuel L. Jackson) and a southern renegade and self-proclaimed Sheriff (Walton Goggins). When a blizzard forces the four to seek shelter in a cabin on the mountain, they are greeted by four more unfamiliar characters who, too, are waiting out the storm. With eight strangers with nowhere to go, a fugitive worth a reward and lots of deception, it becomes clear that not everyone may end up making it to Red Rock. See the trailer here.

4. Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice (March 25th, 2016)

Other than Batman and maybe Ironman, I couldn't care less about superheroes, especially Superman, so I hope Batman and his new robotic suit absolutely pummels Clark Kent in this film directed by Zack Snyder. With Ben Affleck taking on the role as the newest Batman, it should be interesting to see how he sizes up to Christian Bale's performances in Christopher Nolan's remarkable Dark Knight trilogy. With a theme of dark versus light, Gotham must decide which hero the city truly needs. See the trailer here.

5. Bridge of Spies (October 4th, 2015)

This one looks like its going to take you for a ride. Directed by Steven Spielberg, Tom Hanks plays James B. Donovan, an American insurance lawyer, that is specifically recruited by the CIA to represent and depend a Soviet spy. Once involved too-deep, Hanks finds himself in the center of a high-intensity exchange between a captured Soviet spy and a captured American spy who both may have crippling information about each others' nuclear capabilities during the Cold War. Tom Hanks puts his life on the line to protect his client and serve his country in a film that will have your complete attention from start. See the trailer here. Can't wait.

6. Legend (November 20th, 2015)

As I said, I'm a huge Tom Hardy fan, and this film has him playing both Ronnie and Reggie Kray, two identical twin gangsters from the East End of London during the 1960's. Brian Helgeland's motion picture follows the Kray twins on their rise to organized crime and their time as the most notorious gangsters in all of London, England. With Hardy playing both the bright, business-oriented Reggie Kray and the slower, stronger and more violent brother Ronnie Kray, it should be a entertaining two hours of brotherhood, violence and power. See the trailer here.

7. The Stanford Prison Experiment (July 17th, 2015)

Now just about every person that has ever taken introductory psychology has heard of the Stanford Prison Experiment. Directed by Kyle Patrick Alvarez and filled with very talented, young actors, this thriller recreates the experiment and the dramatic events that ensued, doing justice to the experiment that my our psychology professors just couldn't do that one Friday afternoon. See the trailer here.

8. Cartel Land (July 3rd, 2015)

Although this is a documentary on a 'top movies list', this is a must see, especially since it is pertinent to the United States and major political issues today. Even if you don't care about that, it will still shock you. With unbelievable access and real footage, this documentary following two vigilante groups, the Autodefensas and the Arizona Border Recon, led by Dr. Jose "El Doctor" Mireles and Tim "Nailer" Foley, respectively. With a view closer than ever before, this documentary captures the fighting and battle against the Mexican drug cartel that has been notoriously ruling the country and mainlining drugs into the United States. See the trailer here.

9. Creed (November 25th, 2015)

Very rarely do sequels of spin-offs live up to the originals, but Creed is an exception. Directed by Ryan Coogler, this film follows Adonis Johnson (Michael B. Jordan) and his journey to live up to the legacy of his father, Apollo Creed. For those who have not seen the six Rocky films, Apollo Creed was killed in a boxing match in Rocky IV. Where this film gets real interesting, however, is when Adonis seeks out the retired Rocky Balboa, played by none other than Sylvester Stallone, to be his trainer for the biggest fight of his career that will make or break him. With lots of energy, motivation, knockouts and a new dosage of the great Rocky Balboa, this film should be a sure hit. See the trailer here.

10. Suicide Squad (August 5th, 2016)

Now I know I said I wasn't a big superhero fan, with the exception on Batman and maybe Iron Man, but guess what? This film has Batman in it and these are not super heroes, they are super villains. What I am most excited about for this film is to see how Jared Leto as the newest joker will live up to the unbelievable performance by Heath Ledger that won him an Oscar and Golden Globe in The Dark Knight. I cannot see Ledger's performance ever being topped, but Leto appears to have constructed a different, yet maddening, new Joker that should very memorable in its own way. Directed by David Ayer and starring Ben Affleck (Batman/Bruce Wayne), Jared Leto (Joker), Will Smith (Deadshot), Margot Robbie (Harley Quinn) and Common (Tattooed Man), this film follows a squad of super villains assembled by the secret governmental agency, A.R.G.U.S., to take on dangerous, or 'suicidal', as the title suggests, in exchange for reduced sentences and hopefully their lives. See the trailer here.

11. The Jungle Book (April 15th, 2016)

This film is by far the most deserving to bring this list to a close. It is sure to make us all realize how old we really are, but who cares, this was easily my all-time favorite book growing up (so much so that my family I named our black labrador retriever, Baloo, after the big black bear. Jon Favreau is the second director to bring The Jungle Book to the big screen. You all know the story line: an orphan boy is raised in the jungle with the help of a big black bear, a panther and pack of wolves. Do yourself a favor and make sure not to miss this film, especially with Bill Murray playing Baloo (yes), Idris Elba as ShereKhan, Christopher Walken as KingLouie and Scarlett Johansson as Kaa. Can't wait for April 2016 because this film is going to be a pure dose of nostalgia. See the trailer that is a little more intense than I remember the book being here.

Remember, these are not the movies for the 'Netflix and Chill' mood, these are the movies that everyone should commit to seeing with full attention, so add them to your list!

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
