Between tuition, housing and meal plan fees, we college students are often left in need of some spending money for those midnight pizzas or a UCD sweatshirt to wear to the basketball game. Making money, especially as a freshman, can be quite challenging. Without a car or extensive knowledge of campus, it’s hard to get hired in your first few quarters. Here are my top ten ways to make money as a college student without a real job.

1. Sell Your Notes: Especially in competitive classes, other students will benefit from your detailed notes or study guides! Upload them to Study Soup or Notesale and share the link with your class. Apply to become a note-taker for the Student Disability Center (they pay $25 a unit). Print out extra copies of study guides and post them for sale in your class’s Facebook page.

2. Babysit: Local families are always looking for extra help with the kids- especially if you have night classes and are able to babysit during the parent’s work day. Join Care.com and make a profile!

3. Tutor: Are you doing extremely well in a certain class? Do you study well by teaching others? Post on Facebook or write on your residence hall’s whiteboard that you will be offering cheap tutoring for a class or two. $10 an hour times multiple students adds up quick!

4. Joyrun: Do you frequently go out to eat? Download Joyrun! Let the community know that you’ll be headed to In N Out, pick up some other student’s orders and get paid a delivery fee for every person you get food for!

5. Be a Guinea Pig: The Center for Brain and Mind is constantly looking for participants for their research studies (the studies are non invasive and involve simple decision making tasks). Don’t worry if you don’t have a car. The Unitrans A line will take you to 5th street and Cousteau Place, which is a 2 minute walk from the facility. They pay between $10 and $12 an hour and you can pick and choose what times work for you!

6. Online Garage Sale: Join the Clothing and Accessories and Free and For Sale Facebook Page. If you have clothes that don’t fit or appliances that you no longer use, post them to the page and meet up with buyers on campus. Ask your parents if they have anything they want to get rid of. You never know who might be in need of a cheap microwave or a gently worn Patagonia.

7. Sell No Longer Needed Textbooks: Join the UC Davis Textbook Marketplace on Facebook and upload pictures of your old textbooks after the quarter ends. You’ll be getting money back for it and helping out some fellow Aggies at the same time! *The page is also a great place to search for books you might need for next quarter- you’ll be saving yourself quite a lot of money by avoiding the bookstore prices.

8. Advertise yourself. A lot of students will take a weekend trip to Tahoe or fly to LA to visit an old friend. Offer to walk or sit for any pets that will be left at home during these adventures. I mean, I miss puppies so much I’d even do it for free.

9. Rideshare: Join the UCD Ridesharing group on Facebook. If you head home for the weekend and have extra seats in your car, offer to let people ride with you for a $10-$20 fee. If you don’t have a car, check the page before buying a plane or train ticket. Rideshare prices are way more affordable.

10. Keep up with events: ASUCD will typically offer stipends (one time payments) for big events like Picnic Day or the Whole Earth Festival. You don’t have to commit to a weekly job- just to one weekend or several hours.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
