There's nothing better than sitting on a warm beach under an umbrella, completely enamored by a good book. The world melts around you, your stress melts away with it, and for that time all that matters is you and this world you've decided to dive into. Sounds great? The only thing you need is the right book, which may be a little harder to find than it sounds. Here I present my top reads this summer, enjoy!
1. "Harry Potter and the Cursed Child"
Every single person knew this book would be on this list, so I put it at the top. I don't know if there is a person on the planet not looking forward to this installment. The book is written as a two part stage play and will follow Harry's oldest son, Albus, and his struggles being attached to his fathers legacy. It will be released on July 31, mark your calendar's everyone.
2. "The 5th Wave" Trilogy
Earth is being invaded by aliens, and they're knocking humanity out in waves. With only a small percent of the population surviving this far, it becomes important to survive for the human race, but what happens when the aliens take on a human form? Pick up this book and find out, seriously. I have a love-hate relationship with this series. The first book, "The 5th Wave," is one of my favorite books in the whole world. The plot, characters, writing, everything is good and well. However, the second book in the series was a little bit of a letdown for me, but the last book was recently released, so I can't wait to see what Yancey does with the series.
3. "Daughter of Smoke and Bone Trilogy"
I just finished this and let me tell you, wow. I was completely caught off guard with how much I loved this book. The writing is extremely well, especially for a YA book. Laini Taylor brings her world and characters to life like no other author does. If you want a series to get lost in this summer, give this one a try. A girl is raised by Chimera, she runs errands for the devil, has bright blue hair, and goes to art school. If you're not intrigued already, I don't know what to tell you. Pick this book up, you won't regret it.
4. "Anna and the French Kiss"
There's nothing better than a gooey romance on the beach, right? Anna and the French Kiss is such a stereotypical romance. Two teens meet at a boarding school that just happens to be in Paris. The rest is history. The book is the perfect bad romance to pack on a beach trip, or even if you just need a quick book to take your mind off things. Usually I'm not a fan of romance books, but this one demanded my attention, and I finished it in one sitting. Give it a try.
5. "A Song of Ice and Fire" Series
If you're into the whole blood, gore, kings and queens-type books, and you haven't read this series, meet your new favorite thing, "A Song of Ice and Fire" has five books so far, the smallest around 800 pages. But they are so worth the read. If you have a lot of time on your hands this summer, I definitely recommend picking up this series. It's a time commitment, but so worth it.
6. "Elanor & Park"
Another gooey romance. The story of two odd misfits finding each other over the course of a school year. They know it can't last, but they give it a shot anyway. A story that caught me off guard, an absolute poolside favorite of mine.
7. "Yes Please"
Amy Pohler has put out this absolute gem filled with stories of her life. A hilarious journey with the author, you'll get to know her in ways you might not want to, but it will be a hilarious ride nonetheless. For the person that loves to laugh, give this book a try.
8. "Gone Girl"
For the person who loves crime and mystery books, this is it. An amazing mystery about the disappearance of Amy Dunne on her fifth anniversary with her husband Nick. This book had me guessing till the end, and is one I recommend to anyone looking for a dark, mysterious book.
9. "Furiously Happy"
Another funny book. Jenny Lawson recalls stories from her past, living as the daughter of a taxidermist. It's a hilarious book about depression and anxiety. If you're like me and thought those could never go together, pick up this book and be prepared to have your mind changed.
10. Any adult contemporary
The epitome of beach books, the adult contemporary. The odd romance books with love that comes too easily and unrealistically (and an odd amount that have Dukes for the main character...). Perfect for any beach read.
Head to the book store, pick up a few of these great books and get reading!
