Hello again! This week, we will discover my list for the top 10 most underrated alt/indie and rock bands since 2010. In this list, each must have released an album by or during 2010. Let's get started!
10. Fitz and The Tantrums: These guys released their first album in August 2010 titled "Pickin' up the Pieces". Since then, they have released two more albums as well as one earlier this summer which included the summer hit "HandClap". Most people do not know that Fitz and The Tantrums have been around since 2010. In fact, it wasn't until their latest album that I had heard about them and started listening to them. The Tantrums are extremely underrated as their biggest hit so far, has been "HandClap" and have had numerous possible hits on their other two albums. From "Out Of My League" and "Pickin' up the Pieces" The Tantrums were able to get some recognition from alternative radio stations, but not as much as they did over the summer. Thanks to "HandClap", The Tantrums might finally be getting the recognition they deserve.
9. Bon Iver: The group from Wisconsin has either blown your mind away or hasn't even touched your mind because you might not have heard of them before. Bon Iver offers such a unique style of indie music and helps please the soul or helps the soul become more depressed from the mellow vocals to the light sound when they tear things apart and have an acoustic jam session. In 2008, Bon Iver released their debut album, "For Emma, Forever Ago" and followed up with self-titled album, "Bon Iver" in 2011. You most likely have heard their song "Skinny Love", but have heard it sung by Birdy when she covered the song. At the end of September of this year, Bon Iver released their third album. Their latest album, "22, A Million" has definitely received more attention than their past albums, but still their most popular song is "Skinny Love". They seem to be getting popular in the indie world and continue to move up the ladder.
8. Dawes: The Los Angeles based band has been making music 2009 when they released their first album, "North Hills". Since then, they have released four albums including one released in mid-September. Dawes has recently started to gain popularity, but are still unknown to most people. Songs such as "Things Happen" and "When The Tequila Runs Out" has helped spark some enlarging in Dawes' fan base. This West Coast rock band has become one of my favorites in the past year and am happy to be a part of a small fan base.
7. Empire of the Sun: The duo released their debut album, "Walking On A Dream" in 2009 which featured their hit song, "Walking On A Dream". Empire of the Sun is so underrated that "Walking On A Dream" just started getting played on the radio this summer. Since their debut album, they have released two more albums one being released just recently. Empire of the Sun is now starting to get the recognition that they deserved back in 2009.
6. City & Colour: This man has been around since 2005 and continues to produce music that is just perfect for the soul. Since his debut album, "Sometimes" City & Colour has released about 4-5 more albums as well live and deluxe editions. From songs such as, "The Girl" and "Comin' Home" he has been able to increase his rather quiet fan base. His most recent album, "If I Should Go Before You" had the hit, "Lover Come Back" which certainly had my vote for the song of the year and quite possibly the song that's most likely to give you goosebumps. City & Colour has stayed humble for all of these years with still a rather small fan base in which he should because of how talented the man is, but he seems to be just fine with it and as long as it doesn't change his music I am just fine with that.
5. Tame Impala: In 2010, "InnerSpeaker", the debut album for Tame Impala was released and have released two more since as well as a live album. Their most recent album, "Currents" has been the reason for most of their success in recent years. Tame Impala continues to be underrated and unknown although they are starting to be recognized. "The Less I Know The Better" and "Let It Happen" have helped provide Tame Impala with a larger fan base over the past few years. I hope to continue to see Tame Impala to rise above the charts in the future and start getting the recognition they deserve.
4. Florence + The Machine: "Lungs" was released in 2009 as Florence + The Machine's debut album and have released four more since as well as one in 2015. "Dog Days Are Over", "Cosmic Love", and "Ship To Wreck" have just been a few hits of theirs that has helped Florence gain popularity and radio time. They are finally starting to get some recognition, but still not quite how much they deserve. "How Big, How Blue, How Beautiful" was by far one of my favorite albums of 2015 and Florence has become one of my favorite bands over the past few years and am excited to see what's to come in the future.
3. The Avett Brothers: Since kicking off their music journey back in 2002 with "Country Was" The Avett Brothers have since released 10 albums, 3 live albums as well as 2 commentary albums. "True Sadness" was just released earlier this year and has been an absolute hit for The Avett Brothers. With songs such as "I And Love And You", "Ain't No Man" and No Hard Feelings" The Avett Brothers have had success, but continue to be unknown to most people. They don't seem to mind too much as they seem to love and appreciate their fan base very much. Despite, the lack of popularity throughout the country, The Avett Brothers have continued to have success and have gotten better and better with each new album released.
2. Vampire Weekend: The U.S. band has really had a lot of success overseas, but not as much in the U.S. as they should have. Releasing their debut album, "Vampire Weekend" in 2008 and since then releasing two more, Vampire Weekend has been quiet as of recent. "Oxford Comma", "A-Punk" and "Step" are some of the songs that have helped Vampire Weekend gain popularity as well a larger fan base. Recently discovering Vampire Weekend at the end of the summer was one of the best decisions that I have ever made. These guys definitely do not get the recognition they deserve in the U.S. and it upsets me to hear that. Vampire Weekend is so underrated in the U.S. and hopefully in the future they will finally be recognized.
Honorable mentions, but not on the list because of recent popularity: The Strokes, The Revivalists, Cage The Elephant, and Death Cab for Cuite.
1. The Kooks: These British lads have been around since 2006. Most of their recognition being in Britain, they are still an underrated band as they seem to not get much recognition. Debut album, "Inside In/Inside Out" was quite possibly one of the best debut records for any artist that I have ever heard. The Kooks success has mainly been because of songs such as "Naive", "Junk of the Heart", and "Bad Habit" to help influence their popularity as well as their fan base. Their Brit-Pop sound has been enhanced over the years with soul and dance music and have created such an amazing combination. Although, they may not be very popular outside of Britain they are still one of the best bands I have ever had the chance to listen to and are by far one of my favorite bands.
Thanks again! If any questions or any suggestions on topics or bands to listen to please feel free to comment!
