As an avid sushi fan, I’m always on the lookout for authentic, decent sushi that doesn’t require me to empty out my wallet, which is something I’m sure every college student with a love for Japanese cuisine can relate to. However, an unfortunate truth about sushi is that getting it typically requires dining in an upscale restaurant and sitting at a dimly-lit table shortly before forking over $30 just for a few pieces of raw fish (tip excluded). So, I present to you, a complied list of local sushi-providers that can satisfy your cravings and your wallet.
1. Sushi Shack
While this place is more suited for meeting up with a group of friends after class to get than bringing a date to, it’ still boasts a nicely decorated interior and good service. One of my favorite parts about this restaurant is that it offers all of the benefits of an all-you-can-eat buffet without sacrificing freshness. The all all-you-can-eat $10 lunch special includes unlimited sushi and appetizers, yet they’re made fresh to order and brought to your table. One disadvantage is that the all-you-can-eat deal is bumped up to $20 for dinner, so I would recommend opting for the lunch special instead.
2. Sushi Hinoki
Sushi Hinoki is very similar to Sushi Shack in that it still has a relatively nice atmosphere, but offers a cheap buffet-style option. Sushi Hinoki’s $10 all-you-can-eat deal lasts all day, unlike Sushi Shack. However, the sushi, although still more than decent, is not made fresh and therefore creates a bit of a trade-off for the low price.
3. Krazy’s Gourmet Shop
This store and restaurant duo is very unique in that it offers traditional Japanese grocery retail items while serving fresh cuisine and sushi as well. The rolls sell for as cheap as $3, and Krazy’s offers a unique alternative to formal dining by offering a fast-food like approach to ordering sushi.
4. Sushi Time
With a 2 for $10 roll Lunch deal, Sushi Time ranks up with the other great Lunch specials that sushi restaurants in Dallas have to offer.
5. Misami
Misami is hands-down my favorite Japanese restaurant and a great place to get specialty rolls. The food preparation is beautiful and the interior holds true to traditional Japanese restaurants. Misami is lower on the list simply because the prices are a little higher than those previously mentioned, but relatively speaking, it’s still a great place for those on a budget.
6. Maki Boy
Speaking of atmosphere and beautiful food preparation, Maki Boy is another mid-scale restaurant with a nice ambience and delicious sushi that offers speciality rolls for under $14.
7. C-Rolls
This quaint little restaurant provides high-quality sushi and finer dining than buffet options, yet still has amazing bento box deals and a “happy hour” that discounts several traditional sushi rolls. C-Rolls is a good option for casual dining and slightly higher-quality sushi.
8. Tampop Japanese Cafe
From bento box deals to sushi roll specials, Tampop offers good-quality sushi and several other food options under $10.
9. Uni Sushi
The farther down the list I get, the slightly fancier and more expensive each sushi place is (but don’t get me wrong, the sushi quality is still amazing in relation to the price.) Uni Sushi is a bit of a “hole in the wall” place, but provides exceptional service, a nice sit-down dining experience, and most importantly amazing sushi.
