I Took A Walk, Here’s Why You Should Too

I Took A Walk, Here’s Why You Should Too

3 glasses of water and a couple of ibuprofen later and my massive headache still remained. It was then that I chose to talk a walk, thinking the fresh air would help my migraine.

I opted for no electronics (giving up a photo op. with the aesthetically pleasing trees) and invited no one to come with. It was a solo mission.

On my adventure, I discovered several things about myself.

1. The voice inside my head actually sounds like me. I chose to walk in an open field behind my neighborhood. I also chose not to speak during the entire endeavor, not even to hum along to any catchy tunes. I found that there really is a voice talking inside my head and it sounds like me, even though I’m technically not hearing it.

2. Nature is really loud. We like to pretend that nature is peaceful and doesn’t make a sound, but the reality is there are so many noises we hear frequently that we forget about.

3. I am a lazy walker. I have terrible posture, which might be the reason why my back aches like crazy at the end of every day (being 5’10” isn’t easy), and shuffle my feet instead of picking them up.

4. I chew my lips when I’m thinking. As soon as I wasn’t distracted by the scenery around me, my lips would curl back and my teeth would go to town. I should probably start carrying more chapstick.

5. No matter who governs this country, we still have our minds, our voices and the support of each other (and our passports). If all it takes is a group of ants to move a log that a thousand times their size, think what we can do when there’s so many liberals out there!

6. Trees may be the prettiest organisms to bless this Earth. No matter how many of them there are, no two are the same. It’s quite remarkable.

7. Fresh air really does help a headache. By the end of my walk, I had abandoned the worst of my symptoms amongst the grass.

Granted, I did not discover the secret to the universe, but I did find out some little things about myself that I hadn’t paid any attention to before.

Which is why I challenge you, reader, to go on a walk. No phone, no music, no talking, just complete solitude. Pick a spot and walk. Think. Feel. Maybe you’ll learn a thing or two about yourself along the way.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
