To Those Who Want To Give Up

You're a miracle, a real, rare miracle, that fought against the odds to come into existence. So hold on, reader. You will find your purpose.

To Those Who Want To Give Up
Julie Fletcher

Dear {your name},

You might be reading this letter for a variety of reasons. If you're reading this because you feel obligated as a friend or family member, I hope I can help you realize that you should start to appreciate yourself a bit more for going through and surviving so much in your life. If you clicked on this link because the title caught your eye, because you can relate to what you think I'm going to say, then thank you. I promise to you I'll do my very best to make sure you leave with more belief in yourself and your capabilities. If you clicked on this because you have nothing better to read, I promise I'll do my best to change your outlook on life, whether you're aware of it or not. The reason why you started to read this might differ from any other individual, but what's important is that you're here now. We're here. Us, with our diverse backgrounds and personal struggles, with our own drawbacks and obstacles. We have our own demons, and I'd like to take a moment to respect those who are losing faith in themselves. You are going through, or have been through, an unimaginably difficult time. I'm proud of you for making it this far and not giving up. I know you're on the verge, but I promise you can make it through. I believe in you, even if you don't.

I know it's hard to keep fighting against whatever you're facing. I know what it's like to feel held back by everyone and everything in your life. I know what it's like to think that everything would be a lot easier if you didn't care, if you just gave up and let everything go. I'm glad that you held on for this long. It's hard, but you still did it.

I'm not going to wrap you in some sort of illusionary world and tell you that life is going to be completely perfect once you make it past this obstacle. It's not. Life will always throw things at you to push you back, pull you down. It sucks, it really does. All we want is a nice future where we hold our family and friends close and ensure they have happy lives, but not everything works that way. You will face more struggles, you will feel the same burdensome feeling over and over again, you will want to give up again. But you shouldn't.

I have some very meaningful conversations with my friends, and one of my favorites is one that I had with a very close friend of mine. We were talking about how miraculous it is for us to even exist. He said something along the lines of this:

"There's an infinitely small chance that the conditions of the universe were 'right' enough for the Big Bang to occur. Then, the Milky Way galaxy formed, which also had it's foundation on a very infinitely small chance. The chances that the Earth was formed is also infinitely small, and over the course of a billion years, the fact that it became inhabitable is also nothing short of a miracle that had a very slim chance of occurring. Then the meteoroid that introduced organic matter came crashing into the Earth, during millions of years, and somehow, in some way, creatures developed out of the water and evolved into what we are today. Not to mention that even when we get to this point, there's an infinitely small chance that you were born in the first place because of sperm competition and egg-sperm cooperation. Basically, everything came together in the most perfect way to make everyone. Every single person is a near-impossibility. When you look at all the obstacles that we had to face just to be here, it's hard to say that everyone isn't special, because it's just not true. Literal worlds had to come together for us to be here, so everyone is special because everyone's existence is a living mathematical impossibility."

It's beautiful, isn't it? How every atom in our body has been fighting since the very beginning of time to create us. Trillions upon trillions of particles, constantly engaging in their own minuscule wars that ultimately allow us to live. Simple things we take for granted, like blinking, twitching, and, yes, even breathing, are the result of a war that our body fought... for us. Everything that we're made up of is hardwired to take on the world and the things that are thrown at us. The blood that courses through your veins is a warrior in itself. We're built to fight, and we're hardwired to survive.

It may seem to you that everyone gave up on you, and that you're destined to face the world alone. You might be the only human there. Hundreds of people might have given up on you already, but I want you to remember that 7,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 (yes, that's 27 zeroes) atoms have never given up on you for your entire existence. The chances of you even existing on this planet are very slim in themselves, and you shouldn't take that for granted. You're a fighter, a warrior, but most of all, a survivor. You overcame the most difficult battle of all: coming into existence. There will always be things that will try to destroy you and break you and they may even succeed. But if an innumerable quantity of atoms were able to come together to create who you are today, you can definitely build yourself back together better and stronger to overcome the things that try to tear you apart. You're so beautifully, amazingly strong, so human, yet so miraculous.

You are here now. Here for a purpose, here for a reason. It's hard to believe that you are you, living and breathing and pulsing with life against the odds. You're a miracle, and miracles should never be thrown away. There are some things we can't help, like the negatives and the obstacles in life, but it is up to you to keep the miracle alive and the flame burning. Fight for everything that makes you up because what made you up fought for you. Protect yourself because it protected you. Never put yourself after anyone because chances are, they've never been there for you like you've been there for you. Your existence is a phenomenon on its own; don't ever forget that. Don't be afraid to depend on yourself because it's what you've unconsciously been doing for your entire life, and if you are alive and reading this, then you haven't failed on yourself.

I say that you're strong with complete conviction. You have yet to be torn apart, and it is not for no reason that you are still fighting. So when you say you want to give up, you are ending a prodigy, a more-than-one-in-a-billion sensation. You are not a mistake, you are not an accident. The chances of you even existing are too microscopic for that to be true. You are here for a purpose, a beautiful, meaningful, wonderful purpose. Prove to the world that you are more than capable of doing what you were meant to do. You. Here. Now. It was all meant to be. I believe in you. Believe in yourself, find your purpose, and hold on. We're almost through.

Much love,

A Believer

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
