I went through sorority recruitment as a sophomore in college. At Sam Houston, all sorority houses are nearly identical and every house has living requirements. The bedrooms in Sam Houston sorority houses are 14 x 14 feet for two beds, closets, and desks. It’s a tight squeeze. I had a year to spend in my cozy apartment filled with privacy and solidarity. When I moved into the Alpha Delta Pi house, I knew I was giving this up, but man what I got in return was much better.
The companionship I have found in living in the house is incomparable. My sweet roommate is the best person I could possibly live with. She has an odd ability to read my emotions and respond in the most appropriate way. She continuously supports me in all I do and encourages me to be better than myself. There’s no one else I would rather share our tiny room with. Although I say roommate like she is the only person I live with, I have 34 other roommates that put up with me. These 34 sisters endure me on a daily basis. Thank you for letting me come into your rooms and listen to my life when I know you have other things going on. These woman keep me entertained and always know how to bring a smile to my face.
When I moved in, I had no idea how funny living at the house was going to be. Someone always has some sort of odd shenanigan going on. For instance, one week of the year a Leadership Consultant from our Nationals comes to stays with us. I gladly let her stay in my room while slept at a sisters apartment. One day, the sister I was staying with was at work for most of the day and left the door locked. I dug through our laundry room and came across an air mattress. I happily blew that up in the middle of the hallway, took out the lights, and set up the perfect Netflix and chill spot. This was probably the best idea until I had to put everything up. My good friend Kaylee helped me put the lights back on. We had somewhat of a struggle and rendered for more support. Somehow there are 10 people standing around which led to our own inside joke of, “How many sorority girls does it take to screw in a light-bulb.” These spur of the moment funnies happen constantly and keep me laughing throughout the semester.
To those who say they are nervous about moving into their sorority house, don’t be. Prepare to dive into your sisterhood and go in with an open mind. Yes, of course some days I want to live alone but I'm so glad I don’t. These are the only four years that you have the opportunity to live with your sisters. After college there are plenty of years to live alone or with a boyfriend. A sisterhood is something that is rare and sincere, continue diving into its richest parts. Don’t miss this once in a life time opportunity to share these moments with your sisters.
