To the person trying to cope with the loss of a loved one,
I know it hurts. I know you weren't prepared to lose them. I know your life did a 360 from one day to another. I know your heart sinks when you think of the memories you have with that special person. I know you're hurting and that you feel like the hurt will never go away. It may sound cliche and I know you may have heard this a million of times before but it will get better and they are in a better place. I know there's not a manual on how to properly cope with the loss of a loved one but there's a few things I want you to know.
Whether you believe in a higher power or not, just know that everything happens for a reason. You may not understand that reason but there's a purpose to everything in this life. Each of us has a purpose and when someone passes away think of it as them fulfilling their purpose.
I can guarantee that when you hear a certain song, visit a certain place, or eat a certain food, you will get flashbacks that will make you miss your loved one. Instead of looking back at those memories with sadness because they are gone, look back at them with happiness because you had the honor to share those moments with that person. Go out to their favorite restaurant to eat their favorite food in their honor. Listen to their favorite song or go to their favorite hangout spots to reminisce the good old days.
When you lose someone you will feel like there's something missing in your life. However, let your loss motivate you to live everyday in their memory. That way, they can live through you since their time came to an end.
Losing someone is never easy but unfortunately it is something we all will experience in our life time. That being said, make sure to tell those special people that you love them. Visit them regularly without it having to be a holiday or a birthday, give them random phone calls, and eat lunch with them. Tomorrow is never guaranteed and the worst feeling is the feeling of regret or, "I should have spent more time with them."
To the person trying to cope with the loss of a loved one, you are not alone. You have the strength within you to overcome this obstacle. No, it will not be easy and no, you will not get over it from one day to the next. Everyday is what you make it and I suggest to make it a great day for that person who can't be on Earth anymore.
Sincerely,
A girl coping with the loss of a loved one.
