Thanksgiving—
I haven’t forgotten about you, although it seems like everyone else has.
The day after Halloween ended, it was Christmas in everyone’s mind.
No, carols should not be everywhere on Nov. 1. People forget about Thanksgiving. Maybe they plan the dinner and then it’s over. There’s no excitement over you. You’re just thrown in there like a random day off between Halloween and Christmas.
But what about you? What about the importance that Thanksgiving has? Don’t get me wrong, I love Christmas and it’s actually my favorite holiday (sorry, Thanksgiving). But we can’t just skip over you—you are important.
I can’t even watch TV anymore without being persuaded into thinking Christmas is next week. The commercials brainwash us. I don’t want to start shopping and I don’t want to put up my Christmas tree the first week of November. Christmas is over a month away while Thanksgiving is next week. I don’t know why everyone is always planning so far in advance. I like to take things one step at a time—one holiday at a time.
I don’t want to see Christmas trees, presents, and jingles yet. I want to see turkeys, cornucopias, and pilgrims. I don’t want to see Christmas commercials the day after Halloween. I need the time to adjust. It’s Halloween, Thanksgiving, and THEN Christmas. We can’t just forget the middle child.
It’s not fair that you are neglected like so. Stores are opening around dinner time this year—they seem to forget that it’s your day. A national holiday but yet people need to shop, for a holiday that is over a month away. When people need to shop, stores have to open. They’re ruining the holiday, ruining you.
But what if the stores actually decided not to open until midnight? They would honor your day if they started exactly at the stroke of midnight—shopping on the true Black Friday. Stores could actually decide to open on Friday. Instead, they want to ruin the holiday and open at dinner time. People are working on a national holiday and so they can’t even enjoy a Thanksgiving dinner.
People could wait if the stores chose not to open until midnight. It’s supposed to be a fun day, shopping on Black Friday. Instead, we are cutting into the reserved holiday of Thanksgiving.
Thanksgiving is the holiday that transitions us from fall to winter. After Thanksgiving, Christmas and the winter holidays are in full force. I don’t appreciate how I am brainwashed into thinking that Christmas is right around the corner when we are skipping right over you, Thanksgiving.
You are more than just a dinner. Thanksgiving, you represent unity, family, and gratitude. You are more than just a regular day or fancy dinner between Halloween and Christmas.
