Dear Freshmen Girls in Room 203,
Since move in day is right around the corner, I thought it was time for me to give you some advice before you move into your freshman dorm. Believe it or not, your room was once mine.
That bed that you'll dive into every night was once my favorite place to be. Those tiny brown closets were once stuffed with my sweaters and that mirror used to capture my reflection every time I got ready. There was once a vibrant tapestry decorating the wall near the windows. And the view you see outside those windows, and the orange hue the streetlights give it when its nighttime, were the last things I saw before I went to sleep.
I remember when I left that room to go home for the summer, how sad it looked to be stripped of all of the personality my roommate and I had given it. The pictures on the window sill were packed away and the blue mattress was once again exposed without my comforter. I suppose the last view of my room, will be the first view of yours.
I hope that my freshman dorm gives you the same experience it did for me. Will you always leave your door unlocked so your friends can come in at any time? Will you open the windows and listen to the scores of the sports teams when you can't make the games? I hope that this room helps you grow a bond with your roommate and together you make 203 your own personal home away from home.
It must be odd for you to realize that you only have a few more weeks at home before you move into this room. You must not be able to picture living anywhere else, but this will be where you start your journey in college. This room is where you'll goodbye to your parents in August and began to live on your own for the first time. I hope after the initial awkwardness, you and your roommate are able to become best friends and living together in our room makes your freshman year the best it can be.
My advice to you during your months in our room, is to really embrace where you are. While I'm sure I'll love my new room, I'm not sure it will ever compare my freshman dorm. Maybe it was because that room was where I started a new chapter in my life, but I will always remember room 203 whenever I reflect on my college experience.
I know that you may not be thrilled to be in the "freshman" dorm, but trust me when I tell you, you will wish you could go back and have one more night in your first home away from home. So take advantage of the short time you have and leave your mark in our room, because before you know it another pair of girls will be calling your room home.
