It's 2016 and I'm in my 20s, so I (like most of my peers) prefer to text instead of picking up the phone and dialing a number. Unless it's a family member, my phone tends to go to voicemail, and I forget about the phone app on my...phone. If I do want to actually talk to someone, I end up using FaceTime or Skype. Because, why not?
But, there are times when and "OMG, guess what?!" text doesn't do justice to your news. So, if you're anything like me, you pick up the phone and call one of your best friends. In all honesty, you probably haven't talked to them in weeks or months, but you know they'll pick up. Or at the very least, when they see your name on their "Missed Calls" list, you immediately call you back.
To those friends in my life, thank you. Thank you for answering the call at 11 p.m. and not questioning my sanity. Especially when I have news that you've known about forever. You're always excited to hear what I have to say. If I'm complaining, you'll complain with me. You know when to listen, you know when to kindly tell me to calm down, and – most importantly – you know when to yell at me to calm down.
For the most part, we all prefer to not talk on the phone, but to those friends who are always willing, there's no better feeling than knowing that you're in my life. It stinks that phone calls are our primary method of communication since we hardly see each other. It stinks that our phone calls are only a couple times a year. It stinks we can't always talk. But, we have our own live. And we respect that.
Somehow, those friends we don't always see, but know they'll always pick up, are the ones who are your number one fans. The one who would be in the front row screaming your name if you ever became famous. The one who would read the book you wrote over and over until it fell apart. They one who knows your social media posts better than you know them yourself.
So thank you again, to those amazing people in my life. Whether I need you to tell me if it's time to dye my hair again, or it's too late for caffeine, or that I just need to CALM DOWN, thank you. I look forward to our next call, whenever it is.
