Why We Should All Be More Like Dogs
Ashley Brickman

To the dog lovers,

Dogs are known as a man's best friend, but in today's generation, I believe they are a woman's best friend also. Adopting my first puppy is a memory that I will never forget. Dean and I casually walked into a pet store one day in Ohio at the mall while shopping and we immediately saw her. The fluffiest, most perfect little Australian Shepherd sitting in a tiny window. We were never expecting to even adopt a dog, especially that day. But I fell in love with her and I couldn’t let go. The most adorable little puppy was then named Nala. Being a dog mom is easily the best thing that has happened to me. As a college student having a dog does have its difficulties, but it is also very rewarding. Many don’t understand how we can handle having two dogs while also being full time college students and also juggling many other commitments. However, only others who own a dog will understand.

Lets just begin with saying I am a dog person. Actually, I am an animal person in general. I LOVE animals and that is my passion. Nala and Caesar bring so much excitement to my life. Nala is cuddly, cute, hyper, and the most flawless little puppy (even though she’s hardly a puppy anymore) you could ever imagine. December of 2015, we got our second Aussie pup, Caesar. Caesar is goofy, loving, outgoing, and gives the best kisses ever. He wasn’t always like that though. When we first found Caesar on Craigslist Dean wanted him immediately. We drove about two hours to get him and right away we could tell that he had been abused. He was very skittish, scared of absolutely everything. Over time he began to trust us and now Caesar is the happiest dog you could ever meet. Knowing that Dean and I gave Caesar a welcoming home, and changed his life completely is the most satisfying feeling. The hardest thing to wrap my mind around is that if Dean hadn’t seen his post on Craigslist then Caesar probably would not be alive. These two have constantly put a smile on my face daily and the excitement they get when I walk into the room makes me feel so loved. Who wouldn’t want that?

Personally, I believe that having two dogs in college have made me more responsible, caring, and mature. I not only live for myself, but I also live to take care of them. Instead of going out on Friday nights I would much rather spend my time at the dog park, or laying in bed watching movies with my babies. Eventually, your dog becomes your best friend and the one thing you look forward to each day. For those of you who are reading this and wondering why I have chosen to write an article about my dogs-it is simply because of this...my dogs are my inspiration because they are so overjoyed every time they see me, meet someone new, or even by seeing a ball. They have made me realize that we should all be more like dogs. Dogs are a man's/woman’s best friend, they never judge, they are carefree, and they are simply the happiest living being in this world today. I think that we should all live our lives more like them, positive and devoted to one another.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
