To My Very First Friend; My Older Sister

& maybe you will never be capable of stopping a downpour, but I know that you will always take that walk with me through the rain.

Having an older sister is like having a best friend who is forced to love you regardless of how screwed up you are. An older sister is one who guides, persuades, and supports. Without her, my life may be on paths I never was supposed to go down. Without her, my world may have been more of a struggle than an adventure. Without her, I truly wouldn’t carry the strength I do and I sure as hell wouldn’t know the secrets and tips on growing up but never growing too quickly.

Don’t be so hard on yourself there sister. I may have watched some mistakes of yours, but it has just shown me the light to the road of success. Your mistakes do not define you, but the way you got past all of them does; you taught me that. I have sat as a little girl, looking up to you waiting to see your next move. The pressure, lord it must have been stressful. Seeing my two big blue eyes staring up at you waiting for the next step, your next success, or sometimes your next mistake. You have been my role model, without me having to say it. You have been my hero without having any wings. You have proven to me that people are not perfect, yet they are exactly who they are supposed to be… and that indeed is actually what perfect is.

As an older sister, you have shown me compassion. You have given up things just so I could gain them. You have put your own highlights aside to let me have my time to shine. You have expressed such support for me through all of my most important milestones. You have never let me fail, but you have sat back and watched as I figured things out the way I was supposed to. You gave me the materials to make my own choices even on the days I didn’t want to be anything else besides you. Any boy band that you liked, I would learn their favorite songs. Anytime you chose a favorite color, what a coincidence…it was mine too. If you wore hoop earrings, you better bet I was on my way to buy my own (or steal yours). With all of the mirroring of who you are, I have that to thank for much of the positive aspects I have found in myself. Although we are different in so many ways, you have truly shown me the right paths to take and the dark roads to walk away from. You have never shielded me from anything, instead, you showed me the harsh truths that I would eventually be confronted with. You made sure I learned wrong from right, but you were still there when I didn’t listen. You never had to promise to solve all of my problems, but you sure made it obvious I would never have to face them alone.

You are such an amazing individual. You are brilliant and beautiful. You are hilarious and have talent that sparkles off of your skin. You have a smile that can heal a broken soul, yet you have the confidence and boldness to have someone fear your power. To this day, I always know you will be my right hand. You have proven to me that honestly… Sh*t happens; its life. But that doesn’t mean you have to ever give up. Standing next to you… I will always feel like the little sister. I know that down the road, you will always be the one I look to for answers. You will always be that one person who I call to talk about absolutely nothing with. You will be someone who laughs with me and makes scenes regardless of how old we get and I know nothing will ever change between us. I hope this makes you realize, that you have someone who looks up to you no matter what happens. You should know and feel that someone see’s you in a way that you will probably never see yourself. You were never trained or taught how to be a big sister, it just came naturally to you. With a heart as big as yours with so much room for love, God knew what he was doing when he blessed my life with someone like you to look up to. You are more than a sister. You were my very first best friend (and will be my best friend for eternity), my life long side kick, and my very own hero. Thank you for looking after me, protecting me, and respecting the person I am.

From your forever,

Younger Sibling

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
