To my unbiological sister,
I already had a brother to fight with, to protect me from boys and tease me, but I was missing something – I needed someone to talk about boys with, to dream about our future together and share embarrassing moments with. I needed someone who was more than a best friend; I needed a sister.
From the absolute beginning, we were the best of friends – spending endless time together, creating memories, giggling, holding concerts to Shania Twain and making a commitment to always be there for one another. Eventually the label of “best friend” was not enough to capture the bond between us. It was more than just a friendship, it was a sisterhood. I needed a sister and I chose you.
(After holding all of our own Shania Twain concerts, we finally got to go to a real one!)
You have been in my life since the beginning of my existence and as we grew older, you were there every step of the way. You have always been one of my biggest supporters, ready to celebrate my every accomplishment. And when the road got bumpy, you helped to smooth the way. You’ve sat with me as I’ve cried over a lost grandparent, an ex-boyfriend or a friendship gone wrong. In each situation, you helped me see my value amongst the devastation that had consumed my life. You never really knew what to say, but I didn’t need you to say anything at all because I knew that I could always look up and see a person who knew my worth which was reflected in how you cared about me.
I hope you know how much you mean to me and I hope that when you look in the mirror every morning, you see what I see when I look at you, my sister.
In you, I see perseverance to tread through life’s rough waters that have constantly come your way. I know that you have experienced more than your share of problems in life, but you never give up. Even when you want to throw in the towel, you always persevere.
In you, I see selflessness to put your husband’s and two boys’ needs way above yours. Sometimes I want to sort of shake you and tell you that every once in a while, you need to take care of you. But your selfless heart continues to rise above your own needs every single day.
In you, I see a wonderful mom and wife who doesn’t realize how good of a job she’s doing. I know you’re doing the absolute best you can and I just want you to know that your best is more than good enough! Don’t worry so much.
In you, I see an inspiration to many. I know that I, among several others, truly admire your determination, grace and loyalty. Honestly, we simply admire you.
In you, I see a daughter of God who is filled with His beauty and love. Please remember how much He loves you, how rich His mercy is for you and how He will never leave your side.
As your sister, I promise to always love you for just simply being you because that is by far the best person you can be for me. I promise to always try to make you see your worth and value not only in my eyes or others’ eyes, but in the eyes of God. Finally, I promise to always be your sister – through disagreements, despair and distance.
No other decision could ever compare to when I chose you as my sister.
Love always,
Your unbiological sister
