To my sorority,
Three years ago I nervously sat on my bid card, hoping that when I opened that card I would also open the door the "best four years of my life." I ripped open the card and saw the Greek words that meant nothing to me at the time but now, as I enter my senior year, mean so much to me.
Three years ago, I had no idea that over a hundred girls would become my sisters. I never would have known that all these strangers would suddenly mean something to me. As a freshman, I never understood that being in a sorority is so much more than those letters I excitedly wore across my chest, on my backpack, and around my neck.
Thank you, to the countless women who have shaped me into who I am today. I never thought, as that nervous 18 year old, that I would serve on the Executive Council, that I would have the guts to study abroad, that I would continue to push myself to be more involved.
So if you are thinking about going Greek, give those women a chance to show exactly what being in a sorority means, It can mean countless parties, all nighters, straight As, and best friends. It can mean what ever you choose to make the sorority mean. For me, it become a place to call home, a support group when life felt stacked against me, and strangers that became friends and sisters.
I have taken more leadership roles than I ever thought I would, I have kept my grades up, and I have attended the occasional party. I have been a part of a Bible study led by my sisters, sat through study sessions, and volunteered. Being in a sorority is so much more than the two or three letters that you wear. It becomes a place to call home and girls that become not just friends but sisters.
So if you are a youngin and just starting in the sorority, don't scoff at the seniors who are sniffling or flat out crying on bid day or at your rituals or even your formal. These four years fly by and suddenly, you are a senior. But don't worry, these four years will give you so much. To the countless other seniors I know, get ready. This is our last year at the houses that became our homes, so lets be real. Make this the best year. :-)
