To My Social Media Friends

I'm tired of your political bull crap.

Dear Social Media Friend,

Hey there! It’s me, that friend you don’t see very often but, we read each others’ posts online from time to time. You seem to be doing well, and you must have a lot of time on your hands! I wish I had the time to post pictures of my food twice a day! But I have to say, as much as I enjoy knowing that your cattle is doing well on Farmville, I came to talk about something a little more serious. Your political posts.

There has been so much negativity in the world lately: election drama, mass shootings, child abductions and rape are to name only a few. With all the sadness and anger already out there, why do you feel the need to bring even more negativity with your posts?! I mean seriously, do you have a single positive thing to say about anything? If a woman gets raped, she was asking for it! If there is a horrible mass shooting, the gays had it coming because of their perversion. REALLY? Think about the things you’re saying! Have some love and compassion for those that are being persecuted, for goodness sake.

Not only are you negative, but you are ignorant and intolerant! There is a difference between having opposing views of others, and being intolerant of anything you harbor disbelief in. I would say that the line between having strong opinions and being intolerant is a delicate one, but I would be lying; it’s not! It is a conscious choice to have respect for others’ beliefs, and it shouldn’t be a difficult one to make.

Humanity is complex, too complex for you to be able to make generalizing comments about any race, gender, sexuality, or really anything for that matter. Not one person is the same when compared to another. We all have different personalities and traits that make us who we are. So why is it that when a single person commits a crime or an act of violence, you feel it is acceptable to pin the blame on a group of people? How can you associate someone with a terrorist group, simply based on their race or ethnicity? Let’s take muslim people for example. Just because America has had recurrent issues with muslim terrorists, that does not mean all muslims are terrorists! It is simply absurd for you to stereotype people like that. It’s naive, ignorant, and frankly makes you look like a complete idiot.

Social media is a very powerful thing, no matter how you use it. Our generation is one that can make a great impact on the world with this wonderful resource. Take advantage of the gift we’ve been given through social media, and make a positive change! Open your eyes to the way the world is going; many things are no longer black and white like they used to be. Abandon your stereotyping and your hatred for others, and embrace love! I know you feel safe behind the keyboard of your computer, but take heed of this warning: You’re not. The world is watching you. Your friends and family notice the things you say on social media, and it impacts the way others view your intelligence and credibility. If you wouldn’t say something to someone’s face, then you have no business sharing it with the world online. I’m more than willing to delete you off of my friends list, not because I don’t want to be friends with you, but so I can STAY friends with you. Get rid of your ignorance, throw away your intolerance, or keep your mouth shut.

Sincerely,

Your Social Media Friend

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
