An Open Letter To My Future Daughter On Love

Love freely, but guard your heart.

My future daughter,

We have not met yet, and we will not for years, but before you rush into the world with a full heart, there are some things I would like to tell you.

If you are anything like your mother, you will hopelessly love many things. You will adore every person you meet and you will want to give them the world. You will exhale compassion. That's honorable, but do not let it take the sunshine from your eyes. Do not let the everyday people of the world stomp on your heart. Trust me when I say that your heart is your most valuable weapon. Do not throw it around freely.

If you are anything like your mother, you will love the wrong guy. More than once. There will be guys who will love you for how you look. There will be guys who love you for what you can do for them. There will be guys who will love you when it's convenient. There will be guys who love you only when they're drunk. Do not think you can change them. I know you have a heart so big that you will want to overlook it. Trust me. Do not love these guys. Do not let these guys have your heart. Do not let these guys have any piece of you. Do not let a guy hit you, look down on you, touch you in any way that you are not 100 percent comfortable with. Do not let a guy put your worth in him. Do not let a guy make you think you are his property.

Do not love the guy who makes you feel like less of yourself.

If you are anything like your mother, you will have your heart broken. More than once. I do not know you yet, but I never want to see the day you sit with your head between your knees on the bathroom floor because some boy made you feel like you weren't enough. You are enough. Find your value in who you are. Find your value in your walk with God.

If you are anything like your mother, you will love others deeply but struggle to love yourself. Know this: If you love yourself first, you will only attract the guys that love you for you. One day you will meet the guy who makes you realize that the only person you need to be is unapologetically yourself. Love the guy that makes silence comfortable. Love the guy who values what you want. Love the guy who will answer the phone at 1 a.m. when you can't sleep, who respects you, that sees who you are to the core, and loves you anyway. Love the guy you can bring home to me and your dad and we will know he deserves you. Love the guy who knows how you like your coffee and who will kiss your forehead in a room full of people.

Ultimately, I want you to love the guy who makes you love yourself.

I do not know you yet. I don't know of the joys and heartbreaks we are going to have together. But know, my love, that I will always love you, even on the days you find it hard to love yourself. I will always love you with every fiber of my being and every cell of my body. Love is beautiful and love is difficult, but I will be with you every step of the way.

Until we meet,
Your future momma

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
