To My Best Friend As She Transfers Schools

Otters don't drift apart, so we won't either

To My Best Friend As She Transfers Schools
Sarah MacIntosh

Dear Best Friend,

It's been about a solid year since we met, and honestly I can't believe how close we've become in such a short period of time. From growing up on nearly opposite ends of New York State and then randomly meeting when we became hall-mates freshman year (and I thought you were someone else), I never imagined I would meet my best friend under such circumstances.

From being complete strangers who didn't speak to being roommates and doing everything together, you've been there for me through it all. Studying and walking to classes together, taking trips to the dining hall to get gross food that we always regret eating, and late night dance parties in the library during finals week, I can't imagine how college is going to be without you.

However, I understand you have to do what is best for you. You have to transfer schools so that you have the opportunity to study what you need to, and pursue the extraordinary goals you have set for yourself. I am so proud of you for taking the initiative to do so, and going out of your comfort zone in order to accomplish all you have planned. I know you're going to do amazing things.

I know you're probably nervous too; to start a new school and new classes on a new campus that you're not familiar with. So, before you take that plunge and start a brand new journey, I have to thank you for all you've done for me.

Thank you for walking to Starbucks with me almost every day it was sunny. Thank you for helping me survive finals week four semesters in a row. Thank you for sleeping in my room with me when I'm lonely, and for coming to save the day when I thought there was a mouse in the closet that one night. Thank you for laughing at me when I got taken out by that rip tide in the Hamptons last summer, and for going to Friday's with me every Thursday for endless apps. Thank you for sitting on my bed and gossiping with me while I do my hair and for letting me tell you my weird dreams every morning. Thank you for telling me when my outfit looks ugly or my hair is a mess and for fixing my makeup when it's smudged. Thanks for letting me braid your hair and for proofreading my essays before I hand them in. Thank you for ordering Dominos with me and never making me talk on the phone because you know I hate it. But most importantly, thank you for standing by my side when I break down, and for having my back in even the toughest situations.

Even though you're going to be hours away, I know we will stay just as close. Not only did you become my best friend, you became like a sister to me. There really is no bond like that between college best friends, one in which people from completely different places meet, become close and develop a friendship regardless of their differences. A friendship that isn't just reliant on when we look our best in makeup and heels on a Friday night out, but also on when we look our worst in sweats and messy buns on Sunday nights in. This is the friendship we have, and I know distance won't come in the way on it.

Whenever you get lonely or frustrated on your new journey, know that I am always a phone call away, and I'm cheering for you all the way from upstate New York. You will always be my best friend, and even though we won't be roommates anymore, know that my door is always open. Wherever you go, you'll have a home wherever I am.

So, good luck on your new journey, you'll do amazing, and I can't wait to see you and cheer for you along the way.

Love,

Your buddy

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
