As we are all familiar with the shooting in Orlando that happened last weekend, my heart is heavy with sadness for those victims who lost their lives and were injured, and for their families who have been left to mourn the loss of their loved ones. Along with sadness, fear has crept into my mind more than ever before for the fate of our country and the world, and as I watch the news and the headlines about this tragedy, one question comes to my mind and that is: Why can we not just learn tolerance and love?
I’m not a politician or a world leader, I do not know all of the facts. However, I do know that light always overcomes darkness. In this time of great sorrow and fear, I have witnessed a world coming together out of love to support those affected by the shooting in Orlando, despite any differences. The same reaction occurred when Paris and Brussels were attacked. That support may not have been able to turn back time and prevent these attacks, but it lifts the burdens of those who are suffering, and for a moment, it distracts us all from the evil that is in the world. Imagine what could happen if we all showed that love and tolerance for each other on a daily basis.
We have become a very competitive people, which don’t get me wrong, is very good. Competition drives us to improve and be innovative, however, what good is competition if we are tearing down those who we are competing against to get there? This kind of competition leaves scars that are hard to erase and then we are left with distrust and dislike for each other. We don’t have our parents to tell us to hug it out anymore. We have to make the conscious effort to let love drive out the hate.
I know this is not a simple solution to terrorism in the world, nor will it erase what has already been done. I do know that light outshines darkness, though, and that love will always cast out hate. If we can learn to love each other on a small scale—within families, schools, cities—imagine the impact that we could have on the world. Maybe, just maybe, we could give hope back to those who may have lost it.
Jimmy Fallon recently spoke out about the Orlando Massacre in a video posted below, and I don’t know if I could have said what he did any better. Sometimes the smallest actions make the biggest difference, and I believe that a little more tolerance and love is something that we could all contribute to.
